Interview With Jillian Liota:
  1. Can you tell us a little about your books?
My currently released books are The Keeper and the follow up novella, Keep Away, which releases on June 26th. They are both new adult romances that touch on more challenging topics (some abuse, alcoholism, coping mechanisms, self-doubt and feelings of worthlessness), but there are definitely lighter, comedic moments as well. Keep Away is a second-chance romance that follows two secondary characters from The Keeper as they navigate their continued attraction to each other following up 'fling' four years ago.
  2. What inspires you to write? I'm inspired by the potential of stories. I know that sounds vague, but I get excited by the idea of a story, and that's what keeps me moving. It might be a story that gets sparked after a conversation with my husband, or something I read about online. The inspiration is everywhere (man, I'm all about the cliches today!), which is why I keep a journal of story ideas with me everywhere I go. That way, if inspiration strikes, I can take down notes immediately. I don't want to risk a potential story slipping away because I'm busy when it pops up.
  3. Do you work with an outline, or just write? I've tried writing an outline, and I've found that, for me, working off of an outline sucks all of the joy out of writing. I like my characters to evolve naturally, and sometimes that means the storyline might veer into a direction I never would have imagined. So I definitely subscribe to the camp of "just write."
  4. If you ever experience a case of writer’s block, how do you cure it? If I get writer's block with a project I am working on, I start working on a different one. I also write under a pen name, and when I recently dealt with writer's block, I hopped over to a story I've been working on for my pen name. After about a week, I was knocked out of my funk and able to hop back into Like You Mean It, which is my next book. If you are an author, don't let writer's block stop you from writing. Work on something else - anything else - until you get back into it. Just make sure you're getting words on a page. Staring at a blank screen does nothing for your desire to write, and definitely doesn't help you come up with ideas of what to write down.
  5. Do you listen to music while you write?
I always listen to music if I'm doing a writing sprint (if you don't know what that is, it's when multiple authors set a time limit and then try to bang out as many words as possible). In that environment, it keeps my mind moving. But for the most part, I keep things quiet. Sometimes I even put on my husband's noise cancelling headphones so all I can hear are the characters in my head (which definitely doesn't make me sound crazy or anything lol).
  6. What's one random fact about yourself that you can share? I think the best thing I can share right now about myself is how much I am enjoying my new life. I recently started writing full-time, and my husband helps with marketing and advertising. We moved from New Zealand to Hawaii in early 2017 with our two cats and a three-legged pupper. We've been getting really active and focusing on our health lately. Nothing is perfect, and there are always things we can work on, but I can absolutely say that my husband and I are enjoying life right now and making the most out of things.
  7. If you had a superpower, what would it be? Definitely speaking every language. For a long time, I used to say I would want to fly - I mean, isn't that what everyone wants? But when I really thought about it, I realized that words are my actual superpower, so it would be amazing to have the ability to communicate everything to every person in the world.
  8. What are writing projects are you currently working on?
Right now, I am working on a book called
Like You Mean It. It's pretty different from The Keeper and Keep Away, mostly because there is a lot more internal processing and background about characters, rather than jumping right into dialogue. It's also going to be slightly steamier than my previous books, so get ready for some sexy times!!
