Valentines Countdown Blitz Day 11

Donna Hatch is the author of the best-selling “Rogue Hearts Series,” and a winner of writing awards such as The Golden Quill and the International Digital Award. A hopeless romantic and adventurer at heart, she discovered her writing passion at the tender age of 8 and has been listening to those voices ever since. She has become a sought-after workshop presenter, and also juggles freelance editing, multiple volunteer positions, and most of all, her six children (seven, counting her husband). When her parents and twin brother die within weeks of each other, Alicia and her younger sister are left in the hands of an uncle who has brought them all to financial and social ruin. Desperate to save her family from debtor's prison, Alicia vows to marry the first wealthy man to propose. She meets the dashing Lord Amesbury, and her heart whispers that this is the man she is destined to love, but his tainted past may forever stand in their way. Her choices in potential husbands narrow to either a scarred cripple with the heart of a poet, or a handsome rake with a deadly secret.

Cole Amesbury is tormented by his own ghosts, and believes he is beyond redemption, yet he cannot deny his attraction for the girl whose genuine goodness touches the heart he'd thought long dead. He fears the scars in his soul cut so deeply that he may never be able to offer Alicia a love that is true. When yet another bizarre mishap threatens her life, Alicia suspects the seemingly unrelated accidents that have plagued her loved ones are actually a killer's attempt to exterminate every member of her family. Despite the threat looming over her, learning to love the stranger she married may pose the greatest danger to her heart. And Cole must protect Alicia from the killer who has been exterminating her family before she is the next target.

This romantic story of loss and betrayal, forgiveness and redemption, and strangers marrying, will leave you laughing, crying, and swooning. Sprinkled liberally with suspense, mystery, and heart-melting kisses, this is not your ordinary historical tale of an arranged marriage nor of redeeming the rakes. Fans of Victorian and Regency Eras as well as those seeking clean and wholesome romance with plenty of chemistry, not to mention the redemptive power of love, will love this story!

Dance with a duke, outwit pirates, save a kingdom, and fall in love. Believe in happily ever after.

Snippet:

Mrs. Hancock beamed as Alicia reached her side, put an arm around Alicia, and brought her into their circle. “Miss Alicia Palmer, allow me to introduce Lord Amesbury.”
Even more devastating up close, Lord Amesbury turned to her. His piercing blue eyes threatened the strength in her knees. Though taller than most ladies, Alicia still had to look up to meet his gaze. No other color existed in those eyes; no green or gray, only deep, dark blue, like the fathomless depths of the ocean.
All the other men she had met lately, namely those her uncle insisted she consider for a husband, had taken careful note of her figure. But this gentleman only looked into her eyes. Very deeply.
Lord Amesbury inclined his head. “Miss Palmer.” His resonant, bass voice touched her very soul.
Alicia met his frank gaze and a sensation she did not quite understand stirred within her until breathing became a conscious effort. Mrs. Hancock discreetly coughed, and Alicia realized she’d been locked in eye contact with the Viscount much longer than appropriate.
Unable to pull her eyes away, Alicia sank into a curtsey. “My lord.”
No longer merely polite, his smile broadened, warmed, transforming an already handsome face into a perfectly stunning visage. Sensuality radiated off him, not in a manner that left her feeling threatened, but in a way that left her breathless for more. More of what, she did not know. But she wanted to find out.
“Miss Palmer,” Lord Amesbury said, “May I have the next dance?”
Alicia blinked. She looked back at Elizabeth who smiled encouragingly. Mrs. Hancock also smiled and nodded, but a touch of disappointment tainted her approval, reminding Alicia the dear lady had hoped her own daughter would attract the attention of the very eligible Lord Amesbury. That he’d singled out Alicia seemed a dream.
She squelched all hope that she might hold his interest. Surely only politeness motivated him to dance with the plainest girl first. He’d soon turn his attention to the beautiful ladies.
Finding her voice, Alicia replied, “I would be delighted, my lord.”
As the final notes of the current dance ended and the next began, Lord Amesbury offered his arm. She took it, an unfamiliar quiver beginning in her stomach. The art of dancing, she found as the set began, had not abandoned her as completely as her wits. The handsome viscount danced with athletic grace, his attention focused upon her. The warmth of his hand seeped through their kidskin gloves. He held her gently, firmly.
A playful glint touched his sapphire eyes. “I must warn you. Now that we’ve danced, my aunt will take it upon herself to ask you your opinion of me. She will most certainly interrogate me regarding you.”
She met those probing eyes and her mouth curved. “Oh? Has your aunt become your self-proclaimed matchmaker?”
A wry smile touched his lips. “Of course. I’m thirty and not yet married. She feels it her duty to ensure I produce an heir before I’m too old. Despite my efforts to delay that obligation, she persists.”
Alicia nodded, her smile deepening at his indelicate statement. “That is a dilemma.”
“Since you and I have only just met, it will be difficult to offer a fair assessment of your character. And if I say anything positive about you, she’ll plan the wedding.” His smile brightened, lighting up his stunning face.
Alicia missed her step. Even while dancing with the very handsome Duke of Suttenberg two Seasons ago, such a keen attraction for a man had never overcome her as it did tonight. Yet she was nearly twenty, for heaven’s sake, not a missish schoolgirl!
“Your aunt is a strong woman and a kind lady, my lord. I am sure you can reason with her.”
“I suppose she possesses a good heart deep, deep down inside, but be truthful; she’s sharp-tongued and outspoken.”
She laughed and then clapped her hand over her mouth. “My lord! She might hear you.”
He chuckled. “Fear not. We needle each other as frequently as possible. I say worse things to her face. I enjoy watching her squirm and plot a counter- attack.”
That reminded her of the playful banter she shared with her cousin Robert. “I don’t recall her ever mentioning you, my lord.”
His smile turned self-deprecating. “I’m one of those relations no one mentions.”

“Chocolate is more than understanding couvertures, Dutch processing, cleavage, undertones. Chocolate is extremely emotional. It carries nuances plain candy does not. You must discover which chocolate lights up your lover’s emotional center, the pleasure-seeking part of the brain.”
“How do you find out? By asking him?”
“Oh, no. Asking is for amateurs. First, I observe, learn something about him, know his tastes and dislikes. Then apply what I know to his personality. Nine times out of ten, I’m right about which is the favorite.”
Yves stepped closer, his eyes still on her, challenging her. “What would you predict is my favorite?”
Mlle Peterson met his stare. “You’re baiting me.”
“Perhaps.” Then tilted his head down and whispered. “Or perhaps I want to see how well you have been observing me.” He scrutinized her reaction.
“I’ve totally pegged you,” she said, not even hiding her confidence.
He cocked his head. “You think you know me?”
She thrust her chin upwards with confidence. “I know chocolate. And I’ve been on the streets with you for four days.”
“Then guess.” This would be entertaining.
“Well.” She stepped away from him, adopting an air of indifference. “Judging by the car you drive, your penchant for passion, and Merino wool suits, I’d guess Mandorie Noir?”
He blinked, unable to believe how accurate she was. She had been watching him.

Valentines Countdown Blitz Day 9

Angelique Conger discovered the wonders of writing books later in her life. Books, however, have always been important to her. As a little girl in a small town, she was given her own library card at the tender age of five, highly unusual in those days.
Angelique reads a book, or three at once, much of the time. She reads most genres of books and until recently only toyed with writing them. Since beginning, she has spent many hours each day learning the craft of writing and editing.
Many would consider Angelique Conger's books Christian focused, and they are because they focus on early events in the Bible. She writes of a people’s beliefs in Jehovah. However, though she’s read in much of the Bible and searched for more about these stories, there isn’t much there. Her imagination fills in the missing information, which is most of it.
Angelique lives in Southern Nevada with her husband, turtles, and Lovebird. She enjoys visits with her grandchildren -- and their parents.

Yosuf held up a hand to help Daphne step down from the high seat.
“Oh, ho. I did not see you, Mistress.” David bowed. “How did you manage that?”
“I sit quietly on the seat until it is time for me to be seen,” Daphne answered. “I was high enough up, you would not see me.”
“It worked. I didn’t see you.” David smiled and offered his arm to escort Daphne into the house.

Snippet:

Olivia had dressed down for the party, but she’d missed the mark. Car race parties were not horse race parties. She stood out like a sore thumb and was well outside her comfort zone.
“What about me?” she asked. “You can’t leave me here alone.” Who knew how long it would take for a cab to come rescue her?
“I’ll stay with you,” Devon said.
“Awesome,” Ginger replied with a big smile. “Thanks!” She turned, disappearing into the mob of bouncing, dancing students, who were making the floor shake along with them.
“But…”
“Looks like it’s just you and me.” Olivia felt the weight of Devon’s arm across her shoulders, the low rumble of his voice setting her chest on fire. She wasn’t sure whether she should be delighted or worried to be left alone with someone as tempting as he was.
“She ditched me.”
“Ah, whatever. The whole night is ours now. We can make it whatever we want. Tabula rasa.”
A Roman wax tablet, a blank slate to write upon…
That sounded tantalizing. And perfectly dangerous.
“I don’t need a babysitter.”
“Nobody said you do.”
“So…you race?” she asked, turning to face him, while shifting out from under his arm.
He nodded. “Do you?”
She shook her head rapidly. Of course not.
“How come?”
She replied with a laugh, unable to come up with an answer that didn’t make her sound stuck up or chicken.
“You like the adrenaline rush?” she asked.
“Nothing has ever made me feel as alive.”
“Nothing?” she teased.
“Come with me sometime,” he said, his eyes on hers. “I’ll teach you.” He was serious.
She couldn’t imagine herself behind the wheel of a race car, but didn’t want to say no and risk shutting him down. She wanted to continue the flirtatious banter.
“I’d rather you teach me how to play pool.” She gave him a teasing glance, letting him know she was imagining his arms wrapped around her body as he helped her line up a shot.
He let out a bark of delighted laughter. “I like your style, Olivia.”
“Want to know a secret?”
He leaned closer, a wicked glint in his eyes. His aftershave was musky, intoxicating, and she inhaled it, waiting a beat before saying, “I already know how to play.”
He grinned, increasing the potent headiness of their flirting game.
“There’s a diner at the end of the block,” he stated.
“And?”
“Want to go for coffee?”
He thought she was drunk and needed to sober up? Ouch.
“It was nice meeting you.” She went to turn away, but Devon cupped her head like he was going to bring her in for a kiss, his steady gaze making her feel seen, special.
Oh.
He didn’t think she was drunk. He was interested in her.
That made her whole body feel as if a bottle of Sprite had been shaken, then let loose inside her.
“Are you going to kiss me?” she asked. “Because I’m going to kiss you.”
Instead of waiting, Olivia lifted herself onto her toes and planted one on him. His lips felt unexpectedly right as he kissed her back. Gentle. Curious. Exploratory... Her arms went around his neck and an awareness filled her. This kiss wasn’t just about her partner. It was about them. Together. An encounter powerful and sweet, full of give and take, kindness and understanding.
Her body warmed, fizzy feelings of delight working their way to her core as the kiss heated in intensity.
Olivia broke free, realizing she was in the middle of a throbbing dance party, kissing a race car driver and acting as if she was free to do whatever she wanted.
She liked it. A lot.
“Wow,” she whispered against his lips. He smiled and oh, it was glorious. As though sunshine shone down on her after a lifetime of rain.
“I think I like you, Mr. Sexy.”

Where’s the harm in pretending to be engaged for a couple months?

Elliott Palmer’s brilliant impulse to propose a fake engagement to his sister’s teacher in order to get rid of a stalker may be the biggest mistake of his life. Or it could be the best thing to happen since his cookie empire went national.

Charlotte Bloomberg feels like she’s walking a tightrope at work after the scandal last year that almost cost her teaching job. Yet…Elliott’s proposal could be the answer to her saving face with not only her co-workers, but her family, too.

As the two work through school calamities, nosy family members, and a stalker getting closer all the time, the lines between real and fake start to blur when hearts get involved. But what happens when the police insist a wedding date will bring the stalker out in the open, and Elliott suspects Charlotte of being a crook?

Snippet:

If Elliott Palmer could fall through the trap door of the stage and magically erase the last five minutes of memory for everyone in the auditorium, including that of the increasingly shameful Krista Fellman, he would be happy to oblige. This was not the way he saw his day going. Krista's announcement of their impending marriage while he discussed business with his kiosk managers disrupted the conversation and embarrassed him. News of the debacle spread fast and by the time he returned to his office, every manager and shift lead was clamoring for more information about his supposed engagement.
Once he was free to leave the bakery, he rushed to pick up his sister, Kelly, before she heard about it from someone else. Running from the bakery, his head full of what the crazy Krista would do next had instigated his unmitigated leap into the ridiculous. He'd forgotten about the rehearsal until he walked in on the scene and allowed Ms. Bloomberg to bump into him. The rest was pure improvisation, although he wouldn't mind rehearsing that kiss a few more times.
"Kelly, don't get all weird on me." He looked around at the silently chewing faces of the students and the flush across Ms. Bloomberg's face.
"Are you?"
Elliott paused. "Well," he rubbed his hands over the back of his neck, "I asked her to marry me and she said yes."
Ms. Bloomberg picked up a clipboard from the floor and held it securely against her chest, but he didn't miss the wide eyes, the fake smile, and the weakened voice as she herded the kids back to the stage to pick up the scene again.
Elliott picked up the bag of leftover cookies and took a step toward the door Krista had just exited. He planned to sneak out and head back to the bakery until the practice was over.
"Don't even think about it." Ms. Bloomberg's teacher voice was back, firmly in place as she stared him down. He stopped in his tracks. On second thought, disappearing right now probably wouldn't look too good.
Taking a seat at the back of the auditorium, Elliott spent the next hour watching the rehearsal and learning why Kelly couldn't stop talking about her English and musical theater teacher. The woman was amazing and, if Elliott hadn't known better, he would have thought she'd been teaching theater for years, not just starting the program. Kelly had given him a rundown on Ms. Bloomberg, whose first name he still needed to learn, and all her many talents since his baby sister began her junior year. Unfortunately, he'd missed the first parent-teacher conference, a fact he now regretted.
Ms. Bloomberg finished the rehearsal with a reminder to the students to bring their personal props the next day and their plans to spend Saturday with her shopping at the local donation center for costumes. He saw Kelly giggling with her friend Megan. He could only imagine what the two sixteen-year-olds were laughing about. Once they were dismissed, the entire cast scattered like ants on a mission and the proverbial bell tolled Elliott's name. Practicing his speech during her rehearsal still hadn't prepared him for what he would say to the pretty teacher, who's life he had inadvertently turned upside-down this afternoon.
As Kelly scooped up her backpack from the front row, she helped Ms. Bloomberg gather her bag and purse and they slowly paraded up the aisle, whispering. Elliott immediately stood and geared himself for the tongue-lashing he knew would come. But, before Ms. Bloomberg could begin her redress, he offered her one of the last cookies and said, "Would you allow me and my sister to buy you dinner so I can explain?"
Charlotte took a small bite of the cookie and stared at her pseudo-fiancé. "These are really good cookies."
"I'm glad you like them."
"They're like the best I've ever had."
Elliott felt his chest puff out a little. "I try my best."
"You made them?"
"They're my recipe. I don't do a lot of the baking myself anymore. I have a staff of bakers."
"Oh."
Did she sound disappointed? "But, for you," he said, almost with an urgency, "I'd bake your favorite cookie everyday with my own two hands."
Kelly grunted, stifling a laugh.
Ms. Bloomberg's slight smile eased the tension somewhat and a quick glance at Kelly kept his discomfort choked back. She needed an explanation, too.
"So, dinner?" he asked.
