Interview With Marcia Kester Doyle

1. Can you tell us a little about your book?
"Who Stole My Spandex? Life In The Hot Flash Lane" is a witty selection of stories from my madcap world of menopausal pitfalls, wardrobe malfunctions, and my family full of pranksters. From couples' colonoscopies to nightmare holidays, freak accidents and clothes shopping horror stories, no topic—no matter how crazy or unimaginable—is too taboo. The book is loaded with a heavy dose of self-deprecating humor and just a dash of sentiment.
2. When did you know you wanted to write a book?
I had a wild imagination as a kid, which got me into trouble at school since I rarely listened to the teacher. I was a big into daydreaming, concocting stories in my head instead of learning my multiplication tables. I started keeping a journal in middle school and knew by the age of thirteen that I wanted to write for a living. Of course at the time, I envisioned a very glamorous writing career and thought that I'd publish the next great American novel by the time I was eighteen. After graduating from college several years later, the reality (or rather, the true struggle) of a writer's life was an eye-opener for me.

3. Do you have a favorite spot to write?
My home office. My desk faces a large window that overlooks our street. When the neighbors drive by, they see me at my desk and wave from their cars. I'm also privy to the secret lives of the squirrels that inhabit all the trees in my front yard. Mating season is particularly interesting.

4. What is a usual writing day like for you, how is it structured?
I like to write in the mornings after the first cup of coffee has been consumed. Caffeine does wonders for my sluggish muse. I also enjoy writing late in the evening after the rest of the house is asleep. No phones or blaring televisions. I need the peace and quiet in order to concentrate. But I have to admit----Facebook is my biggest distraction. It sucks me in every time, even when I swear that I'm only going to login for a minute.....

5. What's one random fact about yourself that you can share?
I'm a huge fan of Zumba. I attend classes five times a week at the gym. It's the best stress reliever I've found and the workout always puts me in a good mood.

6. If you were a super-hero, what powers would you have?
I wrote a blog post about this very topic several years ago. If I had super powers, I'd eradicate cancer and have the ability to step back in time. My desire for these super powers stem from losing loved ones and wishing that I could change their outcome. If I had known that their lives were going to be cut short, I would have spent more time with them and cherished every moment that we had together.

7. What is your favorite food to put Nutella on?
I can only choose ONE? I prefer Nutella sandwiched between two graham crackers. You can take it to a whole new level by adding a little bit of peanut butter to it. Addicting stuff.

8. What writing projects are you currently working on?
Aside from keeping up with my own weekly blog posts for Menopausal Mother, I also write for various online sites. I'm currently working on book #2 as well. This one is a little different-----I'm still injecting humor into some of the stories, but the tone is more intimate. I'm shooting straight from the hip with this book----it's a memoir that delves into my youth and the dynamics of our family life during the early years.
