BLURB

War can never be forgotten.

No matter how many years have gone by.
No matter how many roads I’ve travelled.
No matter how many women I lose myself in.
The memories remain.

And on top of it all, I have the Dear John letter memorized in my head I received the day of the bombing.
War and love can go straight to hall because I’m done with both.
The only solace I have is the club.
We’ve been traveling awhile now and it’s time to go home.
But before we do, I’m collecting my mark and hopefully Reaper remembers.
Because I’m not leaving Vegas without it.

Only, I never thought I’d want a beautiful blondie instead.
There’s a catch.
She’s off-limits because she’s The President’s sister.
Of the Ruthless Kings.
I don’t want love.
And I sure as hell don’t want war.
I’ve lived both and both nearly killed me.
But I can’t seem to stay away, and my terms have changed for the debt has changed.

I’m not leaving without Delilah.
The damn woman’s made me believe in love again.
And I’m not letting that go.
Even if it means I have to fight.

What’s that saying?
Nothing is fair in love and war.

Review Tour for The Crush by Penelope Ward

Title: The Crush
Author: Penelope Ward
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 22, 2021

BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone, second-chance story of forbidden love…

It’s natural to want the one you can’t have. And for as long as I could remember, I’d secretly wanted my brother’s best friend, Jace.

He was six years older and always treated me like the sister he never had.

Fast forward a decade.

We were all in our twenties now. Jace had moved in with my brother, Nathan, and me to help us make ends meet after our parents died.

It was just the three of us—an odd family dynamic.

Living under our roof, Jace was as bossy and protective as ever.

But he certainly didn’t look at me like a sister anymore. That was what made things so complicated.

I was pretty much hot and bothered twenty-four-seven.

And he was torn.

The signs were subtle, at first. Like on movie night, I’d casually rest my leg against his, and he wouldn’t exactly shift away.

Still, I assumed he would never…go there.

Nathan would kill us.

The knowledge of that wasn’t enough to stop the inevitable, though.

Eventually our slow burn exploded.

But more than the physical attraction, we’d developed a strong connection.

We just couldn’t get caught, right?

That sounded simple.

Until it wasn’t.

This is a story of forbidden love, broken trust, and an unexpected second chance.

Review by Gia:

The Crush is a good read.  Penelope Ward is one of my one-click authors so I grabbed this one without reading the blurb.  With a title like Crush, I had some expectations and this one delivered them and more. This one pulled me in and kept me hooked.  Farrah is a good character and sometimes a bit naive. She has a crush on Jace. Jace is six years older and Farrah's brother's best friend.  A decade later Jace moves in with Farrah and her brother, Nathan. I liked Jace. He's sweet and protective. There are a lot of emotions and tragedy that these two face.  These two have a great connection that makes this emotional roller coast of a read well worth the read.
5 Stars!

EXCERPT

“Why are you out here?”
“I’m restless and couldn’t sleep.”
Her voice was husky, laced with a touch of need. But even I wasn’t asshole enough to take advantage of it. “I’ll leave you be.”
She moved closer, putting her hand on my chest. My body shuddered. Shuddered like a prepubescent teenage boy who’d never felt a woman’s touch.
I wanted her, and yet my seldom-present conscience wouldn’t allow me to act on my attraction to her. Not while she was this vulnerable. Guess there was a first time for everything. “This isn’t a good idea.”
She didn’t pretend to misunderstand me. “No, it isn’t.”
I should have walked away. A better man would have. I leaned in, my lips inches from her ear. I could practically feel the buzz coming off of her. “I should leave, before we do something you’ll hate me for tomorrow.”
“What if I hate you now? Would another reason matter?”
My chuckle filled the air. “You wish you still hated me.”
“True. It was easier before you were thoughtful.”
I searched her face. “If I kiss you, will you kiss me back or bite off my tongue?”
She smirked. “Only one way to find out.”
I crashed my lips to hers, groaning like a man who’d been starved too long and was getting his first taste of the finest meal. Tory didn’t disappoint, meeting my needy kiss with one of her own.
Fuck. When was the last time I’d actually taken the time to kiss a woman? Slide my tongue inside of her mouth and taste her? The answer was as empty as my aptitude for giving a shit about most people.
I moved my hands down to her ass and lifted her up, practically weeping with pleasure at the way her legs wrapped so perfectly around my waist. My strides were long and purposeful, eating up the distance until we arrived at my pool house. Letting her down easy, I then pinned her against the door while I fumbled with the code to let us in.

TRAILER

EXCERPT

As the amber and pink hues of a Vegas sunrise peeked through the blinds, the radiant heat of the muted rays fell in bands over the comforter, and Cinder’s eyes drifted open. He blinked up at the ceiling as his mind meandered toward consciousness.
After waking up in the same bed for over two months now—the longest stint he’d ever had in the same sleeping quarters, if he didn’t count his tour bus, which he didn’t—he was finally starting to get used to the luxury of the familiar. He relished the recognizable comfort of a bed he could call his own and the intimate ease of a space he knew and could navigate without thought.
But as his brain chugged into gear, something struck him as different. Not wrong, just not the same as usual. He went to lift a hand to rub the sleep from his eyes but found his arm trapped by an unexpected weight. Before he could turn to assess the source of his encumbrance, enough awareness seeped into his mind to bring back memories of how he’d fallen asleep the night before.
Wrapped in the arms of Ellis Tremaine.
A smile crept up his cheeks as he rolled over to pull Ellis against his chest. Snuffling in his sleep, Ellis came willingly. He threaded a leg between Cinder’s and circled an arm around Cinder’s waist to anchor their bodies together. Smile stretching into a grin, Cinder brushed a kiss over the whorl of hair at Ellis’s crown as he reveled in the beauty of waking to such a cozy, content moment.
This is what he’d been missing all these years. Every time he’d pushed another nameless partner from his bed in the wee hours of the morning—choosing to sleep alone after sharing a romp in the sheets rather than waiting to see where the morning might take them—he’d given up another chance at finding the one thing he’d needed most.
Comfort. Stability. A rock to cling to in the stormy seas of life.
A home.
Because that’s what this was. This moment with Ellis in his arms, sated by memories of a day spent working side by side and an evening shared without the typical pomp and circumstance others required, it was the home he’d been searching for all his life. Just as his parents had always tried to tell him, but he’d never understood.
Home wasn’t a physical space. It wasn’t something you could find in a brick-and-mortar structure or by tying yourself to a single place. Home was a feeling. An emotion. A sense of well-being and security. Of being cared for and wanting to—no, needing to—care for another.
In its simplest form, home was love. And as Cinder clung to Ellis’s sweet warmth, he knew love was where his heart was headed. Maybe he hadn’t quite fallen that far yet, but it was coming for him, and he was ready to take the plunge when it did.

EXCERPT

When I wake, Cal’s bedroom is still dark and the bed is empty beside me.
I roll onto my side and try to fall back to sleep, but my formerly tranquil mind won’t stop spinning. Part of me feels like I should be out there searching for Kenzie. But part of me also knows that Cal’s right. I can’t help my friend if I’m too exhausted to think. Plus, that terrifying driver might still be looking for me.
I hold my kitten close and plunder my brain for anything useful Kenzie might’ve said about Steph when I was distracted. Nothing new jumps out. I shift onto my back and stare at the ceiling. Eventually, my mind wanders back to the party. How anxious I felt, and how easily Cal was able to comfort me.
What’s strange is that, even though we were at a sex party, sitting on Cal’s lap didn’t feel overtly sexual. At the time, it felt sweet and comforting.
But looking back, I can’t help picturing how things might’ve gone differently if I’d guided his hand between my legs.
Tension pools in the cradle of my pelvis. I press a hand to my mound through my underwear.
Cal says he doesn’t want anything from me in exchange for letting me stay here. I wish he did want something. I wish he wanted everything.
I whimper as I rub myself. I shouldn’t be doing this. Cal might hear me. But my body’s wound so tightly, I won’t be able to sleep unless I release the tension. I couldn’t have been asleep for more than a few hours. Usually, I have to settle for doing it in the shower because it feels too awkward to do it with Kenzie in the next bed.
If I hurry, I can squeeze in an orgasm before Cal comes back, just to help me relax enough to pass out again.
Eyes closed, I imagine Cal’s hands where mine are now, cupping my breasts through my shirt. My nipples push at the fabric, begging to be played with. I comply, gathering my shirt high to bare them.
It’s been a long time since I had the freedom to just lie back and feel myself up. My own touch is almost too much at first, my skin too sensitive. Knowing I’m touching myself in Cal’s bed gives the moment a special kind of thrill. Like I’m breaking a rule.
I slide my hand beneath the waistband of my panties and find myself soaked. My tenderest parts pebble-hard and slippery. I exhale softly, careful not to moan.
There’s no point in trying to imagine anyone other than Cal in bed with me. I’ve never had sex, but I’m not ignorant. I want Cal to touch me. I want him to crawl into bed behind me, his front body pressed to my back.
I imagine his lips at my neck and his hand between my thighs, cupping me. I can almost hear his voice in my head whispering, it’s time to let someone else take care of you for a change.
Someone like him... Someone like...Daddy.
A gush of pleasure rolls through me—the same illicit thrill I get whenever Kenzie says the word, times a thousand. Yes, that’s exactly what I need. A Daddy to hold me, to kiss me, to put me to bed and then climb in beside me. To sing me country and folk songs as he works his fingers in and out of my body.
“Take care of me, Daddy,” I whisper as the pleasure builds. “Oh God, Daddy, I want you...”
The door creaks as it swings open. My hand freezes.
Squinting, I can trace the edges of Cal’s form against the slightly lighter darkness of the hallway. How long has he been standing outside the door? Could he hear me breathing, or worse?
He makes his way toward the bed. I hear fabric rustling, the clinking of metal on metal, the swoosh of a belt sliding through pant loops. I don’t hear him take his pants off before he eases onto the mattress beside me, staying above the covers.
I count the seconds as they pass, acutely aware of Cal’s body so close to mine. The need to come is as real and desperate as the need to breathe. I listen for signs that he’s drifting off. Light snoring, breath slowing.
But he’s as still and silent as I am. It’s impossible to tell if he’s awake or asleep.
My clit pulses against my fingers with every heartbeat. I press down on that tender spot, sending a burst of tingles through my bloodstream.
Maybe he won’t hear me if I just move my fingers.
I fight to keep my breathing steady as I work my fingers in delicate circles. It takes all of my energy and control to stop my hips from rocking. I just need to finish what I started. Then I can go to sleep.
My mind picks up where the fantasy left off, with Cal’s lips at my neck and his fingers inside me. The things he says to me in my mind are beyond dirty. Phrases like, come for Daddy, and Daddy wants to hear you moan his name.
I spread my legs slightly, and my foot comes into contact with part of his body. Even with the blankets between us, the awareness that a part of me is resting up against a part of him sends a flood of desire through me. I work my fingers in tight circles, convinced he can hear my heart pounding. In my fantasy, he’s got me on all fours with his fingers on my clit and his cock poised to enter me.
My inner muscles tighten. I come, gasping softly. But in the quiet, even the softest exhale sounds like waves crashing. I clamp my lips together, listening. The room holds its breath, and it’s not the only one.
Cal sits upright. From the sound of his movements and the way the mattress dips, I’m pretty sure he’s planted his feet on the floor.
Panic seizes my limbs. I was so fucking stupid to think he wouldn’t hear me. Now everything is ruined because I couldn’t resist finishing what I started.
Cal told me himself that he didn’t want anything from me, and here I am fantasizing about him like he’s my sugar daddy, twisting his kindness into something sick and perverted.
“Cal,” I whisper. “I’m sorry.”
He doesn’t respond.
Tears trail into my hairline. I gasp as the bedside lamp switches on. It’s a low-wattage bulb, so the light doesn’t blind me. The first thing I notice is Cal’s bare back, well muscled and tan. I was right about him not having taken his pants off.
He turns to look at me, and I suddenly feel like a deer caught in a hunter’s scope. My heart pounds. He moves in slow motion, reaching toward me, drawing back the covers.
He takes in my bare breasts and belly, my arm wrapped around my stuffie, and my hand still tucked into the waistband of my panties.
“Tell me to leave you alone,” he says. “Tell me to get the fuck out of this room, and to never look at you or think about touching you again.”
Has he thought about touching me? Ever since I arrived here, he’s been so stand-offish. But there’s no denying the hunger on his face as his gaze pours over me.
“I don’t want you to leave,” I say.
He trails his fingers down my arm, all the way to my wrist. Gently, he guides my hand out of my panties. My fingers shine in the lamplight.
My cheeks burn as he studies the clear, wet evidence of my desire. Before I even realize what’s taken place, he’s sucked my fingers into his mouth.
He growls; it’s the only word to describe the primal noise that rumbles from his chest. The sound triggers a cascade of internal responses within me. I hump the air.
Cal runs the backs of his knuckles along the crotch of my panties.
“Who’s your Daddy, Holly?” he asks. “Who do you cry for in the night to come take care of this juicy pussy?”
My eyes go wide. He must’ve heard what I said before he came into the room, which means he knew that I was masturbating before he opened the door.
He climbed into bed knowing I was touching myself.
And he wasn’t turned off by my use of the D-word.
