CHAPTER
Rebecca
was aware of a noise somewhere off in the distance. She didn't know
what it was, or where it was coming from, but she knew it was there
nevertheless. She was in a dreamlike state and felt slightly
apprehensive. Hidden forces were pulling her forward. She didn't
really want to go where they were taking her, but decided to go with
the flow and see what happened.
In
a haze Rebecca watched, as if from above, as she walked towards the
car and got in. The car propelled itself forward and was quickly on
the motorway. In what seemed like no time at all Rebecca was pulling
into the prison car park and memories suddenly flooded her mind.
She
could see rain and a lot of lights, bright white and red, flashes of
blue interspersed throughout. She could hear shouting and car brakes
slamming on. Then the scene changed and a face appeared, blurred,
blue eyes standing out from it. A canal appeared in the distance, red
roses floating on the surface. This image was one which caused a
shiver to run through her. She saw a smile and warmth rushed through
her, chasing away the bad feelings.
Rebecca's
focus seemed to clear. She was standing at the bottom of steps, a
rail running up the middle, she could see glass doors at the top. She
felt herself walk slowly up the steps, her right hand holding the
rail. She reached the top and pushed the door in front of her open,
walking into a large bright space. It was so bright she felt the need
to shield her eyes. There was no sign of anyone else and a sudden
sense of emptiness rushed through her body.
Rebecca
spun round in a circle, searching for any sign of life, but she found
none. For a few moments she contemplated going further into the area
but decided against it as the need to be back outside had her quickly
back at the top of the steps and walking down, again holding the
rail. As she reached the bottom step she felt a presence behind her
and turned to see if someone was there. As she turned, all she could
see were the blue eyes from earlier.
The
eyes came closer, a body morphing round them, turning into a man she
felt she should know. His eyes may have been bright, but they looked
sad. Rebecca didn't want him to reach her, so she moved back a few
steps to try and get away.
"Bex,
don't walk away. Please. I need to explain..." said the man now
standing right in front of her. "I need to tell you why this has
happened."
"Why
what has happened? I don't understand." Rebecca replied.
"Bex
I'm so sorry, I don't exactly understand it all myself. But what I do
know is that this is what was always meant to happen. We were never
meant to go away together. I don't know the plan for your future, but
it's not with me. Please try to understand."
"No,"
she cried, "No, I don't want to hear this. I don't, I don't know
what's going on. This feels wrong, so wrong. Where were we going?
Why? Who are you?" Rebecca asked. As the words left her mouth
more memories assaulted her mind.
Those
eyes belonged to Richie, she was in love with Richie, and he was in
love with her. They were going away together on holiday, a romantic
getaway to cement their feelings for each other. They were leaving
that day. She was there to collect him. Why was he saying they
couldn't go? This wasn't right, something was very wrong.
"I
remember," Rebecca said to Richie, "I remember everything.
We are going on holiday today, we need to leave now. What do you mean
we were never meant to go? Why book it and not go? Explain it to me
please!" she pleaded.
"Bex
none of this is real, it's only real in your head. I'm not really
standing in front of you, and we aren't going away on holiday.
Believe me when I say I wish things were different. I tried
desperately to avoid this, but everything seemed to work against me.
I am so so sorry this has happened. You must believe that my love for
you is as real now as it has always been. Always remember that I love
you and I always will."
Rebecca
stood in shock, wanting to close her ears to what Richie was telling
her, yet at the same time almost needing to keep listening in order
to understand what was going on.
"Bex
you need to move forward from this, don't wallow in the grief so long
it changes who you are inside. You will always have the memories, and
the love, to keep you going. Find someone else, someone who will love
you, look after you, care for you for years to come. I know in my
heart that is the right thing for you, no matter how hard it may be."
"Find
someone else? I don't want anyone else, I want you. I love YOU. Why
is this happening? Not real, what's not real?" Rebecca almost
screamed at Richie.
"Try
to remember, please just try to remember. But never forget I love
you."
As
he said the words Richie started to fade away, into the distance,
until there was nothing left. The noise Rebecca had heard earlier
returned, quickly becoming louder, turning into something physical.
It began to hurt her ears, her heart, her very core. She could make
out blurred faces in front of her eyes, shock evident as she watched
them.
It
was a scream. The noise. It was a scream. Her scream. Rebecca was
screaming and everything flooded back in an instant.
Richie
was dead. He had died inside the prison, in a room he was forced
into, as he escorted prisoners back to their cells after a fight
broke out. The love of her life was gone, taken from her in an act so
violent she couldn't get it straight in her head quite yet. Her life
as she knew it was over, and she didn't want to go on without him.
"Richie,
don't go. Please don't go." Rebecca managed to say, as she
slipped into darkness. She wanted to forget, she needed to forget.
Perhaps when she awoke it would turn out to be a dream. No, not a
dream, a nightmare. One which she hoped beyond all hope she would
come out of intact, but at the same time realising deep down that she
wouldn't. Her life had changed and she wasn't sure she could go on
without him.

About The Author
I am a Scottish lass born and bred, grew up in Ayrshire now live in Bonnybridge. An avid reader as a child, my love of books has grown with me. I am a blogger, although I am currently taking an extended break, a reviewer and a beta reader. I am a huge supporter of indie authors, and still can't quite believe I'm about to join such an amazing group of people.
I work full time as a nanny in Edinburgh. To break the monotony of rush hour traffic I occasionally find myself daydreaming on my way home. It was during one of these journeys that the idea for Hearts in Danger came to me. Knowing I had to get the story out of my head I took part in Nanowrimo 2015. By the end of the month I had not only written over 50,000 words, I had surprised myself by sticking to it every single day.
What happens next, who knows? Wherever this journey takes me, though, I will be forever grateful for the help and support I have had along the way from family, friends, bloggers, reviewers and authors alike.
