About
Interview With Sherry D. Ficklin:
- Can you tell us a little about your books?
Well, I have 15
published novels now, and each series is vastly different. I tend to
sub-genre hop, which is great for my mental flexibility, and harder
on my fan base at times. I mean, it jumps from paranormal to
steampunk to historical to mystery. The only real thing they have in
common is that they are all under the ya/na umbrella, and they all
feature very dynamic, interesting characters.
- Which book has been the most fun to write?
Losing Logan is my
all time favorite. I laughed so hard writing that book that I had to
stop occasionally to catch my breath. It’s also a stand alone,
which I think made if fun in that I didn’t have to stress over
foreshadowing or sequels. Yeah, that’s my all time favorite. People
have written to tell me that they were reading it at work or on the
subway and got weird looks because they kept busting up. I love that.
It feels really good.
- For someone who hasn't read any of you books yet, which one would you suggest they read first?
It really depends
what sort of book you like. I love all of them for very different
reasons. My most popular series is the Stolen Empire, which begins
with Queen of Someday. If you like romance and/or historical that
might be a good place to start.
- Do you have a favorite spot to write?
My office is my
haven. I’m constantly changing it around to be sort of in theme
with whatever I’m writing at the time. Right now I’m working on a
book that is set in the 1920’s, so it’s very art deco. But yeah,
it’s my safe place.
- Do you listen to music while you write?
Yes, usually. If
I’m really stuck I will listen to it very loud, if not, it’s just
sort of on in the background. I have to be really careful because
whatever I listen to tends to change the vibe of my writing.
- Do you work with an outline, or just write?
Depends on the
book. I outline my historical stuff to within an inch of its life.
But the contemporary stuff, not as much. I do vision boards for each
project, and keep binders with images, notes, scraps, etc for each
book so I can flip through it as I write. I keep bios on the
characters, city images, maps, etc in that. Very handy.
- When did you know you wanted to write a book?
I’ve always loved
reading, and so I suppose it grew out of that. I love making up
stories and creating new worlds. It wasn’t so much a decision as it
was recognition. Like, oh, I think I’m a writer. It’s just part
of who I am, it always has been.
- Are you attending any author signings this year?
So many events! I’m all over the
place, beginning with Houston on the 20th. I keep a full
list over on my website:
http://sherryficklin.com/information/appearancessignings/
- What are you working on next?
Ok, after swearing
I wouldn’t do a historical again for a long time, I am working on a
historical fiction called Canary Club. It’s about Ben and Masie, 17
year-olds from very different worlds who fall in love in prohibition
era New York city. It’s sort of a blend of West Side Story and The
Great Gatsby, with my very special brand of humor. This is also the
first book I’m working with an agent on, so it will be really
interesting to see what happens with it. We are also going to be
doing some really fun interactive things with it for readers, so if
you’re interested, you can check out the official website for it,
