Use Somebody by Riley Jean

Reeling from a traumatic and heart-shattering loss, Scarlett Rossi escapes back to her hometown, a place that never changes, though nothing about her is the same. The new Scar is fierce. Untouchable. Resolved to bury the twisted nightmares of that horrible night… the night when everything was stolen from her… the night that divided her life into two: before him, and after.

When do-gooder Vance Holloway makes it his personal mission to cheer up the new girl at work, he has no idea what he’s getting himself into. Scarlett’s tough shell doesn’t fool him. He knows deep down, that sweet, innocent smile still exists, and he’ll stop at nothing to prove it. Patience, persistence, and a little ice cream pay off. Slowly they become friends. Then best friends. Then more. Only one problem: he was never supposed to fall in love.

So begins an explosive tryst of pull and resistance, between one worthy white knight, and the damsel who doesn’t want to be saved. Scarlett won’t survive another heartbreak, but can their friendship survive a compromise?

If Vance is so determined to break down these walls, he’ll have to learn—just as she did—that when it comes to things like trust and love, there are always consequences.

Because the last man that she loved swore to protect her, then paid with his life. And took with him a piece of her soul.

Now Scarlett must decide if true strength means guarding her heart, or surrendering to it once more. One final secret remains: what really happened the night she swore she’d never love another man, and whose hands are stained with his blood?

About Riley Jean:
Life has made me fearless, God has made me strong, and being married to my best friend has me laughing every single day.
I met my husband in an ice cream shop, where he wooed me with three roses and an iPod. Sunny Southern California is where we call home. I earned my Associate’s degree in Psychology and my Bachelor’s degree in Business. By day I am Pepper Potts: pencil skirt rockin’ executive assistant to a top leader at a Fortune 100 company. By night I am Riley Jean: writer, reader, silly dance extraordinaire.
I enjoy early evening walks with my pooch, Delilah, and find joy in music and books. “Use Somebody” is my debut novel. Stay tuned, there’s lots more to come!

Interview with Riley Jean:

1) Can you tell us a little about your book?Use Somebody is a story of romance, between one broken girl, and the boy who refuses to give up on her. It's a coming of age, where the characters develop, hurt, heal, and find their strength before your very eyes. And it's a story of mystery that will leave you biting your nails until the epic, heart-stopping reveal.
You will laugh, cry, fall in love, and feel all the feels in between. Guaranteed.

2) Using one sentence describe Use Somebody?
A powerful journey of love, loss, and redemption.

3) When did you know you wanted to write a book?
Funny story… I actually never set out to write a book. It was always a vague pipedream of mine, but in this case, I was just journaling.
I met my husband working at an ice cream shop. I was 19, during that pivotal stage of life of figuring out myself, relationships, family, career, and life in general. He quickly became my best friend, at a time when I needed one most.
We got married at 25. Shortly after that, I wanted to document how we met, revisit the tender moments and the struggles, plus document everything I learned about people and growing up. There were so many feels, I wondered if anyone else might be touched by it as well. Over three years later, I was able to self publish.

What inspired me to write this book? Real life. Real relationships. Real emotions.

 4) Do you work with an outline, or just write?
With Use Somebody, there was zero strategy planned out whatsoever. I just began writing scenes and dialogue as they came to me. It was 2/3 complete when I decided to turn it into a book. From there I figured out a timeline and created scene transitions. I tweaked it along the way to ensure it flowed. Somehow it came together beautifully.
I do not recommend writing this way.

5) Do you have a favorite spot to write?
In front of the fireplace. Quiet. Peaceful. It helps me slow down and focus. There's something so cozy about it!

6) Do you have a favorite food or drink you must have nearby when writing?
Paired with the fireplace, a nice hot chocolate or warm apple cider is heaven when I'm writing.

7) What is your favorite thing to do when you're not writing?
Does reading count? :] I love music--whether it's Pandora playing in the background, watching Disney movies, silly dancing in my bathroom mirror, or catching a Broadway show, there is constantly music in my life. I also like thrift shopping, and I dabble in scrapbooking.

8) What are you working on next?
Hmmm... that's the million dollar question, isn't it? My WIP is 45K words in and I'm so excited to see it unfolding! Before I promise anything, I want to be sure sure I can deliver on this story and do this character justice. Although nothing has been officially announced as of yet, I will say I think readers will be very happy to hear what's coming up! Stay tuned for more :]
