Author Dhesan Neil Pillay :
My name is Dhesan Neil Pillay from sunny Durban, South Africa. Writing has always been a passion for me, encouraged by my parents and several inspiring English teachers through my schooling years. When I am not writing to an eclectic playlist, I spend my days working as a junior doctor. Both medicine and writing are joint passions of mine and the road to this point has been amazing, but the journey is only beginning and I look ahead with great enthusiasm for where the road leads next.

Interview With Dhesan Neil Pillay:

How did you choose the genre you write in?
When I was younger I always had a love for space and stories like the Star Wars franchise captured my imagination. I thoroughly enjoyed science fiction stories. As I grew older I was introduced to the fantasy genre through the Harry Potter series, The Lord of the Rings and The Sword of Truth. Both genres appealed to me and I decided I would like to try my hand at crafting a fantasy story of my own that could also incorporate a space opera feel to it.

Where do you get your ideas?
Most of the ideas usually came from day dreaming and once the initial idea is down I consider how the idea would unfold. I generally picture the story unfolding as a movie and ask myself what would be the most interesting way for events to pan out.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?
An outline is a must or I would have no direction with my writing. I plan the story out in a general overview then take each chapter down to a series of scenes where I construct them individually and at the end ensure that there is a continuity across the entire project.

Do you have a favorite spot to write?
I usually write at my desk with my lava lamp on to add a soothing ambiance (there is always a cup of tea or coffee with some type of chocolate that is integral to the ritual). Generally I prefer writing at night, because this is time after work and it is quieter which helps me get lost in the story I am creating.

Do you listen to music while you write?
I always listen to music when writing. I generally use instrumental music and more often than not it is theme music from movies. I feel that the music helps create the mood for my own movie which I picture in my mind as I flesh out details of how my characters are undertaking their objectives. The music also allows me to write with a certain tempo which I feel fits the scene I am creating.

What do you do when you are not writing?
When I am not writing, I am probably at work as a junior doctor in a government hospital. I also enjoy spending time with my girlfriend outdoors and try to find time to study, workout and hold onto the hope that one day I will start playing the guitar again.

What writing projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on Legacy of the Sentinels, the sequel to Wrath of the Exiled. It is still in the planning stages.
