Release Boost for Stay by Garnet Christie

Title: Stay: A Copperslane Romance Novel
Series: Copperslane #2
Author: Garnet Christie
Genre: New Adult Romance
Light Beauty & the Beast Retelling
Release Date: November 23, 2021

BLURB

Two names––opposing meanings.

Lizzie:

DuBois––a name of pain. The root-word of heartbreak.

Saber was the boy terrorizing our school halls. His uncle was the man who exterminated the happiness in my life by taking my parents from me.

I’ve spent the last seventeen years shutting out the nightmares, piecing my existence back together.

But the bandages are fragile.

Saber’s return to Copperslane shreds through the tender healing I’ve tried to nurture.

I’m left with two hopes.

That Saber doesn’t stay and he’ll stop looking at me like he understands pain.

Saber:

I never thought a name could be a light. But in my darkest moments, Eliza is the single hope I’ve ever known.

She was the candle guiding me out of the abyss.

Seeing her reawakens dreams once lost––that her love is mine.

Unfortunately, our twisted past weaves only suffering for my flower.

And her thinking that I know nothing of pain shreds through my heart.

Now I’m wondering if I should stay, and if she's my fiore at all anymore.

Stay is an adult novel and while it is not a dark romance, some of the subjects matters this book touches on are dark. Not all themes are explicitly shown, however, topics include abuse––physical and verbal, many scenes dealing with alcoholism, recalls of death, as well as foul language. Reader discretion is advised.

EXCERPT

Beginnings:
My first day of kindergarten, all I remember walking in was seeing a boy—one with hair black as night, and eyes so green and clear I could have been gazing through Mom’s stained-glass suncatcher.
When I learned his name was Saber, I remember “oohing,” completely awestruck. I’d never heard of such a name. It sounded special, matching the boy I saw.
From the unusual way he talked to the expensive clothes he wore, nothing about him blended in. Head to toe, he was exceptional.
I still remember the heart flutters that happened when he stood close to me one day, fixing a broken toy.
“All you need is some muscle behind it,” Saber announced to my playmate as he snapped the red and blue action figure’s knee into place. The glossy white teeth gleaming against his naturally dark skin transfixed me—holding me into place— stealing my heart until the organ didn’t even live in my chest anymore.
That was the day I knew I wanted to marry him.
Me being five years old didn’t matter. I’d met my husband. I even told my mom that when I went home. All she said: “Honey, that is sweet, but remember that you’re young and so much can change.”
Goodness if she wasn’t right.
Not only did life change in the most terrible of ways, but so did Saber.
For him, helping fellow classmates morphed into shoving them to the floor. Laughter transformed into sneers and punches. The “let me help you’s” turned into “get off me, you’re stupid, and I hate you.”
As the years passed, the only part of Saber I could see was those eyes that reminded me of Mom’s kitchen window—but even those glowed differently. Hatred had devoured the kindness that once shined. They grew darker as each year passed.
Eventually, the kid who was going to be my husband became the one I cowered away from in the hallways of our school—more than that, his last name, DuBois, became a representation of an agony cutting so deep that it hollowed my existence, making me believe that death could be a sweet blessing.
And so, the flames of my affection were snuffed out. Never to be revived again.
Or so I thought.

Two sexy, powerful brothers want me.
One is a perfect gentleman.
The other is rude, arrogant, and hates me.
Or does he?

MIA

Landing an interview with Stroke Magazine is a dream come true. That is until Trak Cohen, the co-owner of Stroke, boots me from the interview before it begins. He is an egotistical playboy, and I dodged a bullet. Then the unexpected: I receive a call from his brother, Trent, and I can’t turn down the position he is offering.

If only his drop-dead gorgeous brother would stop distracting me.

I will not become another notch in his belt.

TRAK

Being the co-owner of a popular magazine comes with its own set of perks, including an endless supply of beautiful women at my beck and call. Except for Mia, who was hired by my brother behind my back. I don’t like her attitude or the way I can’t get rid of her. Worse yet, all of that makes her more intriguing. We can’t stand each other, but we’re stuck with the situation for now.

I’ve almost convinced myself that I care nothing about her, but when Trent goes after Mia, I want nothing more than to steal her heart for myself.

I will win in the end.

We are proudly supporting humanitarian and animal charities, including Best Friends Animal Society.

“Thanks! See nothing to worry about Mia.” I took her hand to make sure she gets out of her seat. She grabbed the cup that was next to her on the desk with her free hand as I said. “Gentleman, you can just tell Mr. Cohen that Mia’s roommate’s granny busted a hip line dancing or bungee jumping or something.”

I watched as Mia’s cheeks flushed with a dark pink.

         “You knew?”

“Of course, I knew.” I said with a prideful grin.

I escorted her through the underground parking lot and opened the passenger door of my Toyota Landcruiser.

“This, is your car?” she asked incredulous.

“You were expecting something else?” After unlocking the vehicle, I held the passenger door open for her.

“Yes. A big pretentious, bright yellow hummer perhaps?”

“Are you disappointed?”

“No. Only surprised.” Her brow knitted with concern. “I didn’t think we were going off site. If Trent checks on me…”

“Here we go again with this.” I have to work to keep the snark out of my voice. “What makes you think he holds any weight with me?”

“I don’t know what weight he holds with you, but he’s still my boss.”

“I’m your boss.”

“You hate me.”

“I don’t hate you.”

“You’ve said it, you’d rather have my best friend as an assistant.” She reminded me of the rude words I spoke before.

I’m disgusted with my actions towards her.

“That’s not exactly accurate.” I held open the passenger door for her.

“Trent hired me.” Her voice quaked. “He can fire me.”

“Mia…”

“Honestly, Trak the only reason I even still have a job is because of Trent. If you recall, you sent me packing over perfume.”

“MIA!”

“WHAT?!”

“Would you just get in the vehicle?” Making my eyes gentle, I added. “Please.”

Surprise flashed over her face before she huffed at me. But she sat her cute ass on the passenger seat anyway.

As we took off through Manhattan, and I finally had her alone next to me, I felt myself loosen up.

Furious, she stared out the window. “What was I thinking, getting into this car with you?”

“God, you’re gorgeous when you’re angry.”

I meant it, but of course the comment only infuriated her more, inciting vehement wrath.

“What the… WHAT?!” she shouted. “Pull over and let me out of this car right now Trak!”

Her eyes we’re positively on fire. I could do this all day. I maneuvered the vehicle to the side of the road.

“But I haven’t shown you the something yet.”

“I can only imagine what that something is.” She quips.

“Mia, I don’t want to be enemies.”

“You drew those lines, Trak. From the moment we met, first when you stole my taxi, then when you treated me so appallingly at my interview. At the office. On sites. Shall I go on?”

“I did all of that. Could you… would you… give me a second chance?”

“What makes you think you deserve one. You’re hardly even a friend.”

“Mia…”

“You can’t even say it!” She was so hurt. All because of my behavior. I wished I could make her understand.

“I’m sorry. I was completely wrong to have ever treated you that way. I have been a first-rate ass. Please forgive me.”

I couldn’t take it anymore. Leaning towards her, I gently cradled the back of her head in my hand. Her chestnut hair was like silk against my palm and fingers.

Risking her right hook—or the probability of her clawing her nails across my face—I brought her soft, pink lips closer.

Her gaze lifted to mine, her dark, thick lashes framing her ocean blue eyes. The storm in them still raging.

“Please.” My voice was all but a whisper as I pressed my lips against hers.

Her mouth tasted of the chai tea she had been sipping, cinnamon spice and clove. My eyes fell closed as I leaned into her.

Mia stiffened, but only for a moment, before she melted into the embrace.

Her sweet lips were soft and warm. The kiss was tentative at first like we

were testing each other.

Tasting each other.

And Mia tasted like perfection.

Review By Gia:
Stroke in a good read. It's a unique story.  It's not an anthology; it's a calibration of 24 authors writing one story. When I realized it was not an anthology, I was worried if I would like it because I hadn't read a lot of these authors before. It flows great, and if each chapter didn't say which author it was by, I wouldn't even know there was a change in the author.  I loved Mia and Trak. They have great chemistry even though they try to fight the chemistry they have.
4 Stars!

EXCERPT

“I don’t want to have dinner with you tonight. That’s it.” She takes a step back and claps her hands together a few times as if she’s brushing off some crumbs. “I am happy to pay you for the job with a dinner here at the apartment with Olive as we negotiated. But a date is not going to be payment.”

I gasp. “I’m not a whore. I want to take you out to dinner because I’m attracted to you, not because I expect payment.”

I turn and storm toward the bookshelves because now I’m offended. And I don’t get offended.

Aside from my disdain for olives, I’m an even-keeled dude. And I don’t need to beg for a date. I have a slew of ladies dying for me to take them out.

“I wasn’t saying you were a ... prostitute,” she says, and her tone is much softer now.

I don’t turn around even though I’m dying to, because I like that she’s being nicer now.

I have no shame in my game if making her feel guilty gets her to sway my way.

“It’s fine,” I say, as I run my hands along the wood, giving her a nice look at my oversized hands. They happen to match certain other body parts. I sniff the air, frowning. “I don’t smell cookies either. Clearly, you don’t keep your end of the bargain.”

“You had cookies yesterday,” she huffs and I grin at the bookshelves. She is so fun to rile up.

“Today’s a new day,” I say quietly. “And since you’re not agreeable to dinner tonight and you’re making me wait until Friday, and I don’t want your money, I would take a cookie or five today. I deserve something today, don’t I?”
