Our Moon by Jennifer L. Allen

Synopsis:

Ally Monroe can’t remember her name, let alone the eighteen years of her life before a car accident put her in a year-long coma. She wakes up to the reality that her parents are dead and she has amnesia.

Released from her long-term care facility to live with her twin brother, Alex, and older brother, Trevor, Ally tries to piece together what she can while attempting to live her life again. Enter Chase Baker, guitarist for her brothers’ rock band, JACT. There is something about him that Ally just can’t resist, but the mysteries of her past are looming in the back of her mind, threatening to destroy anything she tries to build with him.

Do Ally and Chase have a chance? Or is there a secret in Ally’s past that may get in the way?

Excerpts:

#1

“Stop staring at me like that, you creeper!” she laughs, throwing a grape at me. It bounces off my nose and falls to the blanket between us.
“Hey now, don’t you waste the fruits of my labor,” I tease. I pick up the grape and pop it in my mouth, grinning at her. “And I thought you like it when I look at you.”
“I do, but it was like you were participating in a one-sided staring contest.”
“It’s because you’re so beautiful I can’t get enough of you,” I tell her.
She sighs dreamily and her eyes cloud over. ‘Swoon,’ I believe is the term. “You’re such a romantic.” She leans forward and gives me a quick peck on the lips, but I surprise her by pulling her down onto me and deepening the kiss. I hold back my groan as she moans in response. She pulls back just enough to look in my eyes and say, “I can’t get enough of you either.”
We alternate between making out, snacking on the remaining fruit I brought for dessert, and talking while looking up at the stars and the moon.
“Every time I look at the moon, I think of you,” she says.
I roll my head to look at her lying beside me. “I think of you, too.”

#2

That’s the band,” he points to the picture of him and Trevor with the two guys.
“Chase and Joey,” I say, remembering their names from Alex and Trevor’s ridiculous and hilarious stories. They must be some group when they are all together.
“Yep,” Alex smiles. “That one’s Joey,” he points to the shortest of the four, the one with the beard. “And that’s Chase,” he points at the blue-eyed blond, between Trevor and Alex in height. Both are attractive, but Chase… Chase is gorgeous. Those eyes. I half expect to see the sun shining in them; they are the perfect color of sky.
“Will I meet them?” I hope I will meet him.
“Heck, yeah,” Alex grins and nods.
“In due time,” Trevor says from the doorway. I spin quickly to look at him, I didn’t realize he was standing there. He had brought up the last of my bags from the car and they were sitting by his feet in the doorway. “We don’t want to overwhelm you, and, well, they can be overwhelming.”
“Joey can be overwhelming,” Alex corrects. “Chase doesn’t do anything.”
“He doesn’t do anything?” I question, beginning to feel like a parrot.
“Chase is the strong, silent type,” Trevor says. “Joey has the energy of a toddler. Bet you can guess who was friends with who first?” I laugh, the descriptions of Joey and Chase are just as I’ve described Alex and Trevor in my head.
“You’ll probably see Chase around here sooner rather than later, though,” Trevor informs me. “He lives in the apartment over the garage.”
I nod; I won’t exactly mind seeing him around. At least, I don’t think I would mind. Can’t tell them that though.

Interview With Jennifer L Allen:

1. Can you tell us a little about your books?
At present, I only have one book out, Our Moon. It was released back in June and it was my baby. Change of Heart, my second book, is due out in November. Change of Heart is unrelated to Our Moon, and both books will have follow-ups. They will all be standalones, though.

2. Using one sentence, can you describe Our Moon?
Our Moon follows Ally, who has amnesia, as she tries to piece together her past and work through her feelings for her brother's best friend, Chase.

3. When did you know you wanted to write a book?
I like to read. I'm 100% a reader. I never thought I'd write a book. Never even dreamed of it. Then I had this dream, and the idea for Our Moon was a result of that dream and it was playing on replay in my head. Usually, when something is stuck in my head, I write it down (I'm a list maker!) and it helps get it out of my head, at least for a minute. So I finally decided to give it a shot with Our Moon. Now ideas are coming at me left and right and I can't seem to stop. I would have been content with just writing and releasing Our Moon and moving on. But I couldn't stop there. It's addictive!

4. Do you ever experience writer’s block?
Writer's block stinks. If it's not something I can push past, then I just move on to something else. A later scene, a different book, or I just don't write. I don't want my stories to be forced, I want them to flow naturally, so I try to have patience and work around it...by ignoring it, I guess? :)

5.  Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I pretty much just write. I jot down notes if I need to remember something for later or get a great idea for a scene and don't want to lose it, but for the most part I just write and see where it takes me. Sometimes it takes me to strange places and I scratch it, but for the most part it takes me right where I need to go.

6. Do you have a favorite spot to write?
I don't. I usually write at my desk or in bed. Sometimes I sit on the couch. Depends on my mood and what level of outside noise I can tolerate at the moment.

7.  Do you listen to music while you write?
Sometimes. I absolutely love music and I listen to it all the time, but it depends on whatever writing zone I'm in. Sometimes I simply can't have background noise. Sometimes, I am nearing writer's block and need to give 100% of my focus to the story, so if I play music I'll start singing or humming and get distracted.

8. What do you do when you are not writing?
When I'm not writing I'm either at my day job (Office Manager), at school, listening to music, travelling, at a concert, hanging out with my husband and/or family, playing with my dog...but mostly I'm reading!

9.  What writing projects are you currently working on?
While Change of Heart is being edited, I've been working on a follow up story to Our Moon that follows the oldest brother, Trevor. I've also got a follow up planned for Change of Heart, so if I stall out on Trevor's story at any point, I'll swap over to that. I try to remain flexible and not make any promises to readers (release dates, etc.) until I'm really far into a project. As of today, I'm 12,000 words into Trevor's book and it's still flowing pretty steadily.
