Travels With Penny, or, True Travel Tales of a Gay Guy and His Mom

I opened the door to the sex shop and found my mother standing in front of the display case talking to a tall salesman wearing a leather harness, jock strap and a dog collar. The first thought was, “Oh, crap!” The second was, “I hate it when Dad’s right.”

Watching my mother investigate the testicle torture devices, cock rings and nipple clamps was not even close to being on the weekend’s itinerary. It was so far removed from my itinerary, it was in a separate zip code. This New York trip was supposed to be a celebration of my thirty-fifth birthday, it was supposed to be an opportunity for me to have one last grand hurrah before the fall semester kicked in and buried me under the pressure of literature reviews, critical analysis papers and thesis research. I envisioned this weekend to be a fun filled romp around the Big Apple, not a safari through Leather Wonderland with my mother.

Thus begins David Alan Morrison’s hilarious memoir about the evolution of family dynamics. Following the sudden death of his father, a single, middle-aged gay guy struggles with his own mortality by reminiscing about the travels with his gregarious mother and, in doing so, discovers a new dimension to his relationship with himself, his parents and his regrets. 1. How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have written 4 books: ANGAKOK ( LGBT suspense thriller), GUILD OF IMMORTAL WOMEN (magical realism with female central characters), RESCUING AWEN (middle grade adventure fantasy) and TRAVELS WITH PENNY; OR, TRUE TRAVEL TALES OF A GAY GUY AND HIS MOM (a humorous memoir)I have written 4 books: ANGAKOK ( LGBT suspense thriller), GUILD OF IMMORTAL WOMEN (magical realism with female central characters), RESCUING AWEN (middle grade adventure fantasy) and TRAVELS WITH PENNY; OR, TRUE TRAVEL TALES OF A GAY GUY AND HIS MOM (a humorous memoir) My favorite has to be PENNY.  Not only because it's my mom (!) but also because I wanted the book to be fun - interesting, yet meaningful.  I'm glad of the result.

2. Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

 I write when I feel the overwhelming urge to do so...I don't have a set time, nor do I force the writing when it's not coming naturally.

 

3.  Do you have a favorite food or drink you must have nearby when writing?

No - I don't keep food / drink around when I'm writing.  I usually think/talk to myself and the walk to and from the kitchen gives me time to mull over the writing obstacle. 

4. Do you have a release day tradition?

Release day tradition? MOVIES! I love the movies.  When a book comes out, I take the day off and head to a giant bowl of popcorn at the local discount movie place.

 

5. Do you listen to music while you write?

Never listen to music while writing.  I like it totally quiet.  I don't even let people talk to me.

 

6. If you had a superpower, what would it be?

My superpower - to change my physical body.  MYSTIQUE is my role model.

 

7. What  writing projects are you currently working on?

I'm wrestling with my writing demons about the vampire/human gay romance.  I don't want it to be "another damn romance"...I think it can be funny and adventurous.
