Excerpt
It’s a cliché, but as I walk out of the ballroom the
gala is being held in, I feel lighter, like a weight has been lifted from my
shoulders. The sounds of the party quickly fade as I leave it and my family
behind. I know this is a shitty way of doing things, but I couldn’t think of
another way. Besides, it’s not like I had this planned. It was only when Reed
gave his toast that I realised I had no idea what I was waiting for. It’s not
like my family are going to give me a permission slip to leave. I don’t even
know if they know I’m not happy. Nope, this is all up to me.
I quickly drive through our moderately sized home town
to the house Jax and I share. Looking out my bedroom window, I can see the
house I grew up in, the lights all on. My pa and pop are in there looking after
Avery and Chris. I know I should go over there and tell them what I’m doing,
where I’m going, but I’m scared shitless of their reaction. It’s not that I
think they’ll be pissed; it’s the disappointment I know I’ll see in their eyes that
stops me. I might be the strong, silent type, but I don’t know if I’m strong
enough to withstand that. With all my
shit packed, I quickly scribble a note.
I’m sorry I
left this way, but it was the only way I thought I could. I don’t mean to upset
anyone, but I can’t live like this anymore, it’s too much. Please let me go.
I’ll be okay and get in touch when I’m ready. I’m sorry. I love you all, Mav.
I’m an hour outside Booker when the calls start. First
Bria, then Reed and Jax. Just as I reach the New South Wales border, a final
text message comes through, this one from Park.
Park: Do what you need to, be safe, we love you.
I turn off my phone and toss it onto the passenger
seat. The road stretches out in front of me, and for the first time in a long time
I feel like I can breathe.
About Megan Lowe:
Megan Lowe is a lost journalism graduate who after many painful years searching for a job in that field, decided if she couldn’t write news stories, she would start listening to the characters whispering stories to her and decided to write them down. She writes primarily New Adult/Contemporary Romance stories with Sport and Music themes. She is based on the Gold Coast but her heart belongs to New York City. When she’s not writing she’s either curled up with a good book, travelling or screaming at the TV willing her sporting teams to pull out the win.

Interview With Megan Lowe:
-
Can you tell us a little about your books? They're Australian-based, contemporary romance/sports books. I like to write characters that aren't perfect, that have their doubts, their insecurities, but also have the courage to fight through all of that. I also like to give them, most of the time, a pretty strong familial base, as well as build into the idea that sometimes the family we make is just as, if not more, important than the family we're born into. They're strong on passion, fast, fierce, and a little xtreme! Haha!
-
What inspires you to write?Just the pure need to. I have so many characters running through my head at any one time, so I feel like I have to give them a voice, I want to give them a voice. As far as creating stories for those characters? I like to write scenarios and combinations I haven't seen before, or don't see very often. You see a lot of MC books, that isn't what I write, this series, Rocking Racers, is racing bikes. I also like to shed light on areas I think are often ignored or don't get as much attention or harp on subjects I think could use more than they currently get.
-
Do you have a favorite spot to write? My study. It's down the end of the house so I can kind of hide myself away here and get lost in whatever world I'm creating.
-
Do you have any “odd” writing habits?I handwrite, if that's odd, which I think it is in this day and age. I just find the words flow better that way. Also, I'm not the most computer literate, or the fastest typist so I'd be forever worried that I'd push the wrong button or worry about my spelling or grammar, so handwriting it is. It's long, it's tortuous and slow but I like it. It also gives me an excuse to buy a heap of cute notebooks I'll probably never use but that's okay!
-
If you ever experience a case of writer’s block, how do you cure it?I don't know if it's writer's block per say, but sometimes the words do stop flowing. To fix it I take a walk, usually just around the house, or if I think it's a case of me pushing myself too hard or I know I need a break, I take one. I'll pick up one of my favourite books and read that for a bit. I get inspired by my favourite authors and the images they create so that helps enormously. I also get on Facebook messenger and bug one of my writer buddies who understand where I'm coming from and we talk through our frustrations and that helps too. Knowing there's someone else who understands what you're going through is so comforting, and as a plus, they're so much more talented than I am, so they help me fix any plot bunnies that may come along.
-
Do you work with an outline, or just write?I outline to a point. I have major points I want to hit, but how I get to them is anyone's guess! I'm at the mercy of my characters! I kind of like that, it makes me feel so much more connected to them that way, like it's actually their story I'm telling as opposed to a story I created and they just happen to live in.
-
If you could spend 24 hours as a fictional character, who would you chose?Oh god this is hard! Um, I've got so many great characters running through my head, but I think I'm going to say my female lead from my first book, Breaking the Cycle. I'd love to be Bria for a day and get to hang out with all my Ryan boys!
- What are you working on next?
