Given to Fly:

Can you break your vow if it's the only way to save yourself?

Annelise thought her purpose in life was to get married and have babies. That's what her family and church have been telling her since she was a little girl. But when her marriage turns rocky, and she struggles with her weight and infertility, she fears the childhood dream thrust upon her will never come true.

Then she meets Trek Blue, the father of a little girl in her preschool class. After losing his wife to cancer, he's moved to Indiana with his two young children to seek a fresh start. In need of a friend, Trek is immediately drawn to Annelise, who begins to think of him as a confidant and bright spot in her otherwise dreary life.

But when the two grow close enough to raise eyebrows, she is forced to make a choice. Will Annelise honor her faith, family, and wedding vows? Or will she spread her wings and fly away?

Fat Girl

Fat Girl

Claire Sterling wants a new body to go along with her new life.

She's used to roller coasters. Her weight has been on one for years, and now her entire life is flying off the track. Divorcing in the wake of her husband's affair, moving back home to the Delaware beaches, landing her dream writing gig, braving the online dating world, and facing the big 4-0 are enough to make anyone's head spin. Claire knows her future happiness depends on her ability to reinvent herself. But one fear is standing in her way: that she's forever destined to be a fat girl.

Interview With K.L. Montgomery:
  1. Can you tell us a little about your books?

I write women's fiction. Two of my books are romances and one is not. I think the thing that ties all of my books together is that they're all about real women going through real life struggles: weight issues, divorce, infidelity, infertility, death, and rocky relationships with friends and family members. My heroines are everyday women, and most readers see a lot of themselves in my characters.

2. What inspires you to write?

Everything! I write a lot about weight issues as I've struggled with an eating disorder and yo-yo dieting much of my life. Through that I've found the body positive movement and try to advocate for body positive attitudes through my writing. I've survived divorce, my family disowning me, rape, miscarriage, and god knows what else. I grew up in a very religious family with parents who tried to shelter and control me for many years. I'm also a mother of three and am married to a police officer (just like Annelise in my new release, though my husband isn't a douchebag like Aaron haha!) All of these experiences play into the books I write.

3. When did you know you wanted to write a book?

I've been writing books since I was 8! I didn't publish one until 2012, however. It was my husband, though at the time he was my boyfriend, who convinced me to publish.

4. Do you have a favorite food or drink you must have nearby when writing?

Not really, though I am fairly useless in the morning without coffee, and if I know I'll be putting in a marathon writing session I'm probably going to be drinking coffee while I do it!

5. Do you have a favorite spot to write?

I wrote most of my books on my couch! But I just redecorated my son's bedroom (he left for college last Fall) as my office with all kinds of girly touches like teal, fuchsia, purple and paisley! I love it, and have started writing my next book there at a cute little desk I picked up at a thrift store for $20!

6. Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I try to have a vague outline but usually my characters tell me what to do. haha!

7. What is a usual writing day like for you?  How is it structured?

I have five jobs - four others beside writing, including editing, social media management, teaching, and a full time job as a career navigator at a college. So...I squeeze in writing when I can. That's why I am only publishing my 3rd book in 4 years! I have, however published 6 other erotic romance books under a different pen name.

I wrote the majority of Given to Fly during NaNoWriMo. 60K words all in November and the rest in December. Even so, that was only 2-4 hours a day during the week with a few longer sessions on weekends. I'm lucky I write fast. It's the editing that takes more time for me, and having it go through beta readers, etc.

8. If you were a super-hero, what powers would you have?

Oh, you said powerS - with an S. That means I could have more than one! I'd love to be able to see the future and to teleport. Yep, there'd be no stopping me then! Oh, and could I also stretch time so there'd be more than 24 hours in a day? Yeah, I want that too!

9. What are writing projects are you currently working on?

I've started my next K.L. Montgomery book, and it's a rom com called The Flip. Basically, it's about these two high school rivals (one was valedictorian and one was salutatorian) who end up co-inheriting a house. They aren't too thrilled to have to see each other again - it's been 10 years since graduation - but they are both motivated to fix up the house and flip it for some cash. Of course they run into all kinds of hilarious problems (think The Money Pit with Tom Hanks) and they have totally crazy neighbors too, but somehow they end up working things out....*wink* and that's all I'm going to say about that!
