Covered In His Love

After suffering through two major life blows back to back, the last thing Ava feels like is celebrating her birthday. Chantal and Taryn convince her to enjoy a night on the town to celebrate at a gentleman's club. Little did Ava know that her first visit to an adult establishment would alter her entire her life.

Jared Wright is what pretty much every woman would call the Right Man. He is single, sexy as sin and a partner at a very successful Public Relations firm, 4-Way Relations,’ that he runs along with his cousins who are more like brothers and his baby sister JaVon.

It's just a normal run of the mill night. Jared finds himself unwinding at a gentlemen’s club after a long week of working hard at the office, when he sees her........

The last thing Ava expected to happen when she was dragged to Cover against her will by her besties, was to meet a sexy mysterious man. One that only existed in Ava's wildly vivid imagination and dreams.

Only Ava’s ex-boyfriend Philip doesn't seem to be ready to accept that their relationship is over and when he find out Ava has moved on, he exacts his own form of punishment that will hopefully cripple and ruin her dreams.

Jared may not have been looking for Ava, but now that he has found her, there is nothing he would not and won’t do to provide, care and protect her regardless of Ava's stubborn refusal to accept help when it's offered.

Will Ava finally relent and open her heart up fully to Jared and accept all the love he has to give..............or will she risk the love she has always wanted by listening to her fears?????

Excerpt from Covered in His Love:

PROLOGUE:

Eight Months Earlier….
Okay, everybody quiet down, I’ve got an announcement to make!” Elaine yelled out to the boisterous crowd that showed up monthly to her famous card parties/fish fry she held. No one could fry fish like Elaine Carter. It was rumored that’s how she got her late husband, Ava’s daddy Allen, to propose to her only five days after meeting her. Now, supposedly as the story went, Ava’s daddy had found himself outside her Grandma Tanner’s house after catching a glimpse of Elaine and her cousins walking home after school on a beautiful Friday afternoon.
Before Allen realized it, he had followed the girls two miles outside of town. Not wanting to appear like a stalker, Allen slowed down his pursuit. Copping a squat underneath a shade tree, he watched everyone from afar. He never could tell Ava exactly how long he sat there under that shade tree. All he knew was that the sky’s color started to change from light to dark. It was around that time he started smelling what he described as the most mouth-watering aroma he’d ever been around. And that was saying a lot because his momma could cook!
Story had it Granddaddy Henry must’ve taken pity on him and sent Elaine out with a couple pieces of fish. Grandma Tanner swore to her grave she didn’t send Elaine out to that rascal with no food! She knew once you fed a stray you could never get rid of it. After daddy took his first bite, he nearly gave Elaine a heart attack from staying silent for so long (two consecutive minutes to be exact). Finally his brain kicked back into gear, he asked if Elaine’s mother sold fish dinner plates? Elaine promptly let him know that no, she did not sell her cooking. She then turned on her heel and left Allen sitting alone in the dark on the cool ground by himself! He’d followed her all the way home from town and the first words he asked Elaine was about her momma! It took him fifteen days of constant begging and wooing her before Elaine would give in and accept his proposal.
“As you all know, my baby girl Lainey has always had her nose buried deep in a book hidden away somewhere. Well it seems all that time spent indoors during those summer days has paid off. Today my baby signed with Roaming House Publishing. Her book will be published in four weeks. So raise your mutha-fucking glasses up and toast congratulations to my baby, Ava Laine Carter! The stars and beyond is your limit, baby. Nothing can stand in your way.” The room broke out into a chorus of aww’s as Lainey walked over and gave her mom a tear-jerking hug. No one has ever supported Lainey more nor cheered her on more than Elaine.

“I’m sure everything is going to be fine Momma. It’s probably just a really bad chest cold. Worst case scenario, maybe pneumonia. You probably shouldn’t have travelled with me to the New York book release party. The weather was too cold for you,” Ava informed Elaine in an attempt to soothe both of their unspoken fears as they prepared for whatever news the doctor was going to give them.
Elaine had endured what seemed like hundreds of tests the week before. Giving Ava a sad but reassuring smile she knew Ava needed at that moment, Elaine reached over and patted Ava’s hand.
“I’m sure you’re right, punkin, but there was no way I was missing that. You’ve sacrificed so much and worked so hard for this moment. No, no regrets. Now tell me about this Philip character.”
Philip was Lainey’s assigned editor with Roaming House. He had been extremely helpful in transitioning her into the publishing giant’s family, helping her learn the ropes and how things really worked in the book-publishing world. At first Ava just took his willingness to help as Philip being eager to oversee his first solo client. But as they spent more and more time together in person, Ava felt some interest there. They always communicated by email, phone, and or video chat, Philip always made sure to leave Lainey with a not-so-subtle hint to let her know that he saw her as more than a friend and colleague.
Her second trip out to New York City was in preparation for the book release party Roaming House planned on throwing for her. Philip officially asked to take Lainey out to dinner and dancing. He wined and dined her. Yes, he was a little anal and slightly rude to those he viewed as beneath him, which happened to be pretty much everybody. Waitresses, valets, bellhops, doormen, hell, if you were in service, you weren’t worthy of acknowledgement. But with Ava, he poured on the charm. It had been two years since Ava had been intimate with anyone other than B.O.B., her battery operated boyfriend, so she said the hell with it and slept with Philip. What was the saying, like watching paint dry? After that, sex for them was pretty much nonexistent and Ava felt just fine with that. The only issues she had were whenever Philip was in town visiting, she had to wait until he left to see B.O.B.
Ava had not expected anything more to come from it. She and B.O.B. were actually fine with it. But after that night, Philip immersed himself into the boyfriend role. There were a lot of times when he overstepped his boundaries. Especially when it came to the business, aka money-side, of her book dealings. It had been very hard for Ava to spend time with her mother, Aunt Liz, Taryn, Lorenz, and Chantel. Anytime Ava had a photo opportunity arise, there was Philip, poised, posed, and ready for the money-shot.
“Umm, there’s really not too much to tell,” at the raise of her mother’s brow, Ava rolled her eyes. “Really momma. We met when he became my assigned editor. Of course, in the beginning I had a lot of questions and we talked a lot. When I first travelled to New York we hung out and he was my personal tour guide. Nothing too serious,” Ava willed her body not to fidget under the penetrating and knowing gaze Elaine graced her with.
“Mmm, well all I know is that if I were you, I’d watch out for that one, honey. A wolf in sheep’s clothing if I ever saw one! And you know I’ve called out many wolves in my lifetime.” The doctor walked into the exam room ending further conversation.
“Well Miss Carter, after the test results returned, I sent them back and requested new tests to be run. Your blood tests were ran a total of three times.” The doctor shifted his eyes from Elaine to Ava Laine. “I’m sorry to have to inform you, the results revealed that you have stage four lymphoma cancer.”
The blood drained from Ava as she tried her hardest to hear what the doctor was telling them through the buzzing and congestion her head was filling with. How could this of happened? Her mother was too young! Ava complained about Elaine’s meddlesome ways, but she still needed her mommy. What would she do without her mother? Those were just some of the questions her psyche was bombarding her conscious with.
“If you look at this clouded area of the x-ray, you can see where the cells are clustered. With this being such an aggressive type of cancer and the fact that it’s already in stage four, the prognosis is two to four weeks.”
3 MONTHS LATER………..
Ava sat in the cafeteria of the hospital, grabbing a moment to herself while her mom was undergoing a radiation treatment. Hearing her name being called, she lifted her head to see Philip walking towards her. Her mouth turned up into what she hoped was a somewhat happy smile at seeing him.
“I thought I’d find you here.”
Really? No shit, Sherlock, I’ve only spent every Wednesday here for the past six straight weeks.
“Hey what brings you to my city? This is a surprise.” Ava was glad when Philip sat instead of giving her the cold, fish-like perfunctory kiss he always gave her.
“I know this couldn’t be coming possibly at a worse time than now. But I don’t know how else to handle this but to just do it. Lainey, it’s obvious that you are occupied with the things you have going on in your life, especially with your mom’s cancer and all. I’ve just been feeling more and more lately that I, like our relationship, becoming less and less important to you. And I guess it would be hard to find a balance with all the stuff you have going on.
“I feel it’s best if we end this and just go back to our editor and writer relationship.”
Sitting dumbfounded for what had to be five minutes, Ava’s wits finally returned. She found she was able to genuinely smile for the first time in months and said, “I couldn’t agree with you more, Philip. Thank you.”

Interview With Kortni Renea:

1. Can you tell us a little about your books?
Sure! Most of my books are Contemporary/Interracial Romance. With my last release I branched out into the Paranormal Romance genre and had a LOT of fun doing so.
  1. How did you choose the genre you write in?
I am a voracious reader and these are the genres that I myself mostly read, so it just came naturally for me to write in said genres as well.
  1. If you cold be friends with one of your character, which one would you chose?
Wow, that’s a toughie. I love all my heroines, but if I must choose, it would be Raquel Sinclair from Raquel’s Mane.
  1. Do you work with an outline, or just write?
My first release I didn’t work from an outline, just took pen to paper and fingers to keyboard. My sophomore novel I outlined from start to finish. Junior on the other hand, was a combination of both. I find it best if I at least work with a general outline, that way I won’t veer to far from the path I want to travel.
  1. Do you have a favorite spot to write?
LOL, not really, I can write anywhere, but outdoors especially in front of the ocean on a beach is my ultimate zen!!
  1. Do you have a favorite food or drink you must have nearby when writing?
Nope! It’s always great to have a coke on the side, but it’s not required
  1. What’s your favorite summertime activity?
My favorite summer activity is reading and traveling. Doesn’t matter where I go, as long as it’s away.
  1. What are writing projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on two projects. One is A Tumultuous Love, it’s the second installment in my 4-Way Relations Series, the other is a second installment in my PNR/Shifter CrossBreed Series.
