Interview With Lindsey Winsemius:

 

1. Can you tell us a little about your books?

Patrician and Reaper both take place about one hundred years in the future, after a global war has devastated the world. The books are primarily romance, focusing on the relationships between two young women intent on discovering the truth of the world around them and the dangerous men who come to love them. Both books are full of action and romance, and I wrote them to be a fast, fun read. I've had both dystopian readers and romance readers tell me they were hesitant to mix the genres, but once they read the books, they fell in love with the characters.

2. For Patrician, do you need to read Reaper first?

Patrician follows Reaper in the story of the city of Alba, but both books follow a different love story between two women. I would certainly recommend reading Reaper first.

3. I love your covers.  Who designs them?

I'm so glad you asked! My employer, ApogeeINVENT (a web software and design company) have been so supportive and let me borrow their talented lead designer, Andrew Frey, to create these fantastic covers.

4.  Where do your get your ides from?

I hope this isn't too strange, but the idea for Reaper came from a dream I had about the opening scene of the book. I've always loved dangerous men, and post apocalyptic / dystopian fiction. The stories that became Reaper and Patrician became a combination of sexy, deadly men and a situation in which they are supposed to be the enemy or executioner of a woman they come to love. My romantic little heart just eats that stuff up, and I hope other readers will feel the same love for my characters and their situations!

5. Do you have a favorite spot to write?

Anywhere I can grab a moment of quiet! I actually spend a lot of time writing at my kitchen counter so I can keep an eye on my kiddos, even though I've got a very nice office in my basement.

6. Do you listen to music while you write?

Most definitely! Music really helps to set the mood, and I have specific songs I play while writing scenes. For Reaper, I listened to lots of Bastille's Pompeii, Avicii's Wake Me Up, and Imagine Dragons. Patrician's soundtrack included Elle Henderson's Ghost, and then Rachel Platten's Fight Song.

7. Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I tried outlining, but I never  follow it. The characters usually decide how the story will go, so I just write and then spend lots of time refining. Honestly, the decisions that some of the characters make even surprise me sometimes!

8. When did you know you wanted to write a book?

I've always wanted to be a writer since I was little, but it seemed a pretty impossible dream. I worked as an editor for a publishing company years ago, and loved to work closely with authors. Last year, the company I work for was considering designing a marketing system specifically for authors and I began doing some research about the industry. I decided, the best way to learn about indie authors was to become one, and it HAD always been a dream of mine. Stories have always been knocking around in my head, and one of them became Reaper, and then I was hooked. Writing has become an addiction, and I'm so thrilled to be releasing Patrician!

9. What are you working on next?

I've got at least one more story I need to write about Alba, this post-war California city I've created. Outsider, book #3 in the series, will hopefully be released late 2016. Then I'd love to try my hand at a contemporary romance; I've got several ideas jotted down.
