Interview With D.R. Graham:

 

1. Can you tell us a little about your books?

I write both young adult and new adult contemporary novels, including edgy family dramas, romantic suspense, and sweet romances.

The first two standalone books in the Noir et Bleu Motorcycle Club series are titled ONE PERCENTER and THE HANDLER. IT IS WHAT IT IS just released on February 22^nd. The fourth book is titled THE NOIR ET BLEU and will release in spring 2016. They are edgy and suspenseful family dramas set against the backdrop of the outlaw biker world.

RANK is a standalone contemporary new adult western about two brothers on the rodeo circuit struggling to cope in the aftermath of their father’s death.

BRITANNIA BEACH is a fun and flirty young adult romance series releasing with HarperCollins this June.

2. With the Noir et Bleu Motorcycle Club series, can they be read as a standalone or do they need to be read in order?

Each book is a standalone and can be read in any order. The common thread is the Noir et Bleu Motorcycle Club.

3. Which book has been the most fun to write?

I have enjoyed writing each book for different reasons. Writing ONE PERCENTER was a very emotional process. THE HANDLER and IT IS WHAT IT IS include fast-paced action through international settings based on locations I have visited in my own travels, which is always exciting. The characters I enjoyed writing the most were brothers Billy and Cole in RANK and Len in THE NOIR ET BLEU. These rowdy bad-boys are each layered with a complex mix of flaws and redeeming qualities, which made me love spending time with them. And BRITANNIA BEACH is set in my own backyard, the Sea to Sky corridor between Vancouver and Whistler Canada. The search and rescue scenes and flirty teen relationships were definitely the most fun to write.

4. For someone who hasn't read any of your books yet, which one would you suggest they read first?

If you like biker books, start with ONE PERCENTER. If you like cowboys, try RANK first. If you are a young adult romance junkie, try THE HANDLER or BRITANNIA BEACH first.

5. What inspires you to write?

In my day job I work as a therapist in private practice, so character inspirations are often a combination of people I’ve met over the years. My plots are typically inspired by an emotional life event or news story that has resonated with me. My settings are inspired by my travels and hobbies.  

6. Do you have a favorite spot to write?

I usually write in my living room with music on, but I also frequently write on the ferry and at my cottage.

7. Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I write the first draft without an outline and let the characters tell the story the way it wants to be told. Then in later drafts I layer a three act plot structure over the story to see what is and isn’t working. Sometimes it requires cutting some areas and developing other areas to make sure the plot points all hit at the right places for the length of the novel. Then with the structure in place I revise again to layer in complexities and fine tune the character arcs.

8. When did you know you wanted to write a book?

I always enjoyed creative writing as child and I began writing professionally as a newspaper columnist. I made the leap from creative non-fiction to fiction about five years ago after I read a young adult novel that resonated with me.

9. What are you working on next?

After BRITANNIA BEACH releases I will be working on a very special novel titled INTERNED. It is an historical romance set against the backdrop of the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War II. It is the first historical romance I have written and I’m very proud of it. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.
