About Jennifer Loring:
Jennifer Loring's short
fiction has appeared in numerous magazines, webzines, and
anthologies. In 2013, she won Crystal Lake Publishing's inaugural
Tales from the Lake writing competition; in 2014, DarkFuse published
her novella Conduits, and in May 2015, Omnium Gatherum
released her debut novel, Those of My Kind. She recently
signed a deal for a contemporary romance trilogy with Limitless
Publishing; the first book, Firebird, was published on October
20, 2015. Jennifer lives in Philadelphia, PA with her husband, their
turtle, and two basset hounds. She is currently at work on the second
book in the Firebird Trilogy as well as a paranormal romance.

Interview With Jennifer Loring:
1. Can you tell us a little about your books?
My books cover everything from horror and dark fantasy to contemporary romance. I've mostly published short stories, which have appeared in magazines and anthologies, as well as a standalone dieselpunk novelette, Beautiful Things. I currently have three books out. Conduits is a ghost story heavily influenced by Asian horror and quantum mechanics; Those of My Kind, my debut novel, was inspired by the fairy tale "Donkeyskin"; and Firebird is a contemporary romance about a hockey player's second chance with his first love.
2. Which book has been your favorite to write?
So far, it's a toss-up between Firebird and Conduits. They're both very different, but I had so much fun writing both of them. I'm very happy with the way they turned out and the response to them.
3. How did you choose the genre you write in?
I started off in horror and dark fantasy almost twenty years ago simply because it's what I love to read (and watch, and play). I branched out into sports romance because I'm a huge hockey fan, and the idea for Firebird just wouldn't leave me alone. I'm now moving into paranormal romance, which for me combines the best of both worlds.
4. What inspires you to write?
The easier question would be what doesn't! Fairy tales and mythology/folklore, Asian horror, music, video games, documentaries, dreams, quantum mechanics, philosophy, sports, postmodernism, history, other writers...
5. Do you have a favorite spot to write?
I love to write in coffee shops, if I can find one that's relatively empty. I write most of my first drafts longhand, so I'll frequently write on the couch. I also have an office in the house; when it's time to start typing those longhand drafts, that's where I usually am.
6. If you could spend 24 hours as a fictional character, who would you chose?
Good question. Probably Rae (aka "Sunshine") from Robin McKinley's Sunshine. I completely fell in love with the vampire Constantine in that book--even moreso because he's far from the typical, pretty vampire hero found in most paranormal romances/urban fantasies. I'd be more than happy to swap places with Sunshine and spend a day with him.
7. Do you work with an outline, or just write?
Coming from a short fiction background, I never used to outline. I learned pretty quickly that outlining is almost essential for writing a novel, as resistant as I was to the idea. That said, I don't do full, detailed outlines. For Firebird, I used an outline worksheet one of my grad school professors adapted from Chris Vogler’s/Mike Hauge’s The Hero’s 2 Journeys. One page, twenty minutes, done. The book went through many changes over subsequent drafts, but the core of the story didn't veer from that outline. For Those of My Kind, I reverse-outlined when at the end of the current draft it had become apparent that there were some massive plot holes. For Firebird's sequel, Make Me Stay, the outline was nothing more than the major plot points jotted on a piece of paper. Outlines don't have to be complicated--the main purpose is to help you identify weak spots in the plot.
8. What's one random fact about yourself that you can share?
I have a weird obsession with certain animals--basset hounds (I have two of my own), sloths, goats, owls, and bunnies.
9. What are you working on next?
I just wrapped up the first draft of Make Me Stay. After at least two more drafts, that'll be off to my publisher. I'm letting it sit for a couple of weeks so I can come back to it fresh, and in the meantime, I'm working on a paranormal romance. Featuring a vampire. :)
