Bearly Awake: Providence Paranormal College Book 1

Picture
Bobby Tremain’s life used to seem charmed, but since his dad’s crippling accident, he has an avalanche of problems. He’s the first in his family to have a shot at college, also the first to head north of Louisiana. An early snow calls his Bear to hibernate a week before finals, but he needs to pass or he flunks out of Providence Paranormal College.

Lynn Frampton’s loneliness is almost more than she can take. She went to college on the other side of the country to get away from the persistent curse of unpopularity in a small town. Once at college, Lynn’s prickly personality has pushed everyone away yet again. At least she’s at the top of her class.

Bobby needs Lynn’s help to stay awake and pass his exam, and she discovers she needs companionship more than she’d ever imagined. Lynn’s all set to transfer to a school back home, but Bobby thinks she’s his mate. Can he keep awake long enough to pass, and more importantly, convince his love to stay?

Excerpt:
“Think fast!” At the sound of Lynn’s voice, I reached out, plucking a thick stack of rubber-banded index cards from the air. A stinging in my pinkie made me wince. The hibernation urge had me off my game. Usually, I could catch just about anything in human form, and most things in bear. That’s another thing I wouldn’t be able to do this weekend. Let my bear out.
“What are these?” I blinked bleary eyes. The top card had one word on it, but the wide band across the middle blocked too much of it to read.
“My Ecology flash cards.” She switched on and moved a wireless mouse, waking her laptop up. Then, she pulled open a drawer to reveal a USB keyboard. She plugged it into a port, then pulled up an audio app. “Shuffle them.”
“Why do we need cards if you’re setting up your computer?” I sat on the bed to use the nightstand as a card shuffling surface.
“Study aids.” Lynn looked over her shoulder and smiled. “I’ve got all kinds. Trust me, I’m a Valedictorian.” She dropped a wink and I laughed.
“Can you get more specific for the sleep-deprived among us?” I pulled the band off the cards carefully so they wouldn’t go flying.
“This music ought to help keep us awake.” I couldn’t help but sigh with relief. Study tunes were like a last-minute pardon from listening to recordings of Watkins’ lectures. With a few sweeps and clicks, a wailing voice backed by heavy metal thunder poured out of her speakers. I recognized it.
“Iron Maiden?” I had to think for a moment before trying to shuffle them. There were so many, I had to split the deck a few times and shuffle the sections. These cards were serious business. Once they’d been thoroughly mixed, I gathered them together and held them out to Lynn.
“When you want to stay awake, there’s nothing quite like music that chases down your eardrums like a hell-hound.” She took the flash cards back from me and smiled. “Let’s do this!”

About D.R. Perry:
D.R. Perry lives in Rhode Island, where all her books are set. Although she's not a native New Englander, once up north she got so inspired she couldn't leave. A wild Northern Muse attacked. D.R. used Typing; it was Super Effective.

D.R. writes all kinds of things. Mostly, they have strange and unusual elements. Not strange isotopes or Strontium or anything like that, but creatures who are people or people who are creatures. Beware of the Attack Poetry and rampant puns. Keep off the grass, or the song parodies may bite.

She lives with her husband, daughter, and dog in the Ocean State, which she loves to remind people is not an island and not Long Island. D.R. is well aware that her home state has both of those things, but isn't defined by them. Maybe she likes it here so much because it reminds her that she's also more than the sum of her parts.

D.R. hopes you have as much fun reading her books as she did writing them.

Interview With D.R. Perry:
1. Can you tell us a little about your book?
Bearly Awake is a novella that starts a whole series of Paranormal Comedy books. The books all take place in a college which recently opened admissions to anyone, including humans, shifters, faerie creatures, and vampires as well as people who use magic and have psychic abilities.

2. When did you know you wanted to write a book?
I've always wanted to write a book. It took me an awfully long time to do it, but it was worth the wait!. Bearly Awake isn't the first book I wrote, and definitely won't be the last.
3. For the  Providence Paranormal College series, do they need to be read in order or can they be read as a standalones?
You could read them on their own, but there is an overall story to the series which makes more sense if you read them in order.
4. Which of your characters would you like to meet in person and why?
I'm worried I'd freak out like a mad fangirl if I met some of them. But I think I'd want to sit down and chat with Nox Phillips all about her ancestors. She's the Kelpie from Book 3, Of Wolf and Peace.
5. Do you work with an outline, or just write?
A little of both. I basically have a couple of sentences to tell me what's going on in each chapter. Sometimes, writing the chapter before that makes me go back and change trajectory, however.
6. Do you have a favorite spot to write?
Anywhere I won't get disturbed. Not the band, or disturbed in the head, I mean by other people coming up and asking me for things. That can be my office, a coffee shop, a library, et cetera.
7. Do you have a favorite food or drink you must have nearby when writing?
Coffee, water, tea, in that order.
8. What’s your favorite summertime activity?
Walks at dawn and dusk. Honestly, I prefer Fall and Spring.
9. What writing projects are you currently working on?
I'm always working on the next book. PPC 5 just came out, that's called Djinn and Bear It. I'll be working on book 6 now, also contributions to the second volume of The Longest Night Watch charity anthology for the Alzheimer's Association. Remember how I said Bearly Awake wasn't the first book I wrote? That's the first book in a Historical Urban Fantasy series, which is almost ready to go. Oh, and I have a secret sci-fi project in the works, too.

Excerpt:

He wanted nothing more than to tear their clothes off them, press her against the wall, and bury his shaft deep within her. “Fuck, baby, I want you.”
“Are you trying to distract me?” She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“No, but is it working?” Wanting his hands free, he walked around the dresser and pressed her back against the wall. With her pinned between him and the wall, he took hold of the hem of the shirt and raised an eyebrow. “You’re still wearing my shirt.”
“Your point? It looks better on me than you, anyway.”
His hands slid under the thin material. “I think you look better without it. I want you naked like you were last night.”
“I’ll have to think about that.” She arched into him as his hands slid under the material of her bra.
“What was that?” He tweaked the nipple, hardening the little bud in his fingers.
The floorboard in the hall creaked and the scent of Taber drifted toward Carran. He pulled his hand out from her bra and tugged down her shirt. “What, man?”
“We’ve got to get a move on it. The wolves lost their pup.”

Every family has its secrets…

As the first anniversary of her marriage to Vice President Nick Cappuano approaches, Lieutenant Sam Holland is dreaming of Bora Bora—sun, sand and a desperately needed break from the DC grind. But real life has a way of intervening, and Sam soon finds herself taking on one of the most perplexing cases of her career.

Government worker Josh Hamilton begs Sam to investigate his shocking claim that his parents stole him from another family thirty years ago. More complicated still, his “father” is none other than the FBI director. When a member of Josh’s family is brutally murdered, Sam begins to question how deep this cover-up goes. Is it possible the revered director was part of a baby-napping ring and that others involved are also targets?

With a killer intent on deadly revenge and her team still reeling from a devastating loss, Sam’s plate is full—and when Nick and their son, Scotty, take ill, is her dream of a tropical anniversary celebration in peril too?

“I love you. I’m sorry I brought this situation into our home, and I’m sorry I had to say no to you for the first time ever.”
His lips curved into a small, sexy smile. “You’ll make it up to me.” He leaned in close to brush his lips against her ear. “On your back, with your legs on my shoulders, your ass red from my hand and—”
“Stop it,” she said, shivering from the desire that in stantly heated her core. “Right now. I’ve got to go to work.”
Chuckling, he released her. “Hurry home, and be care ful out there, Samantha. Whoever decided to kill the FBI director won’t think twice about killing again.”
“I’m always careful. Don’t worry.”
“Right. You may as well tell me not to breathe.”
“Don’t do that. I need you alive and well when I get home so I can make it up to you.”
“It’s not fair. You’re suspended and you still have to work. I was sort of looking forward to having you all to myself for a few days. Should’ve known it was too much to hope for. But you’ll pay. Yes, you will. When you get home and when we get to Bora Bora at the end of the month. You will pay.”
Smiling, she kissed him again. “Can’t wait.”
“Me either.” He stole another kiss from her. “Love you so much. Please be careful.”
“I will. I promise. Hold down the fort, and keep an eye on our guest.” She patted his chest one last time and left the kitchen, deciding in that moment to keep the news about Troy from Josh until she knew more. They’d keep it on lockdown so there was no way he’d hear it online or anywhere else until they were ready to release the news.

Blurb

She's everything he wants. Even when she can't see it.

After her last relationship ended in the hospital, Lainey Eversman ditched Ohio to start fresh in a sleepy North Carolina town. Her tiny apartment above the Drunken Duck may be cramped, but she’s ready to let her big dreams erase those bad memories.

When she sprains her ankle, she reluctantly accepts Chris Harper’s help to cut her last few ties to Ohio, though she dares not accept anything else from the sexy architect. The last thing she can trust is her instincts when it comes to men.

Chris knew the fiery Lainey was his one and only the moment he set eyes on her. If only she’d let him get closer than arm’s length. But their trip to Ohio cracks the walls shielding her vulnerability, and she finally, hesitantly, takes that last step into his arms.

It’s still going to be tough to convince her to give love a fighting chance—especially with an ex who won’t take “go away” for an answer.

Warning: Contains a small-town hero who’ll do anything to convince a skittish big-city girl that he’s a safe bet. Expect loyal friendships, sweet kisses, and hot, dirty sex in the great outdoors.

Chapter One

The idyllic countryside of Lainey Eversman’s new home left a lot to be desired when you were under attack by mutant country spiders. Four weeks ago she’d purchased ten lakeside acres in the lush mountains of North Carolina. Currently she was standing on a rickety kitchen chair swatting at a horde of massive spiders crawling through a crack in her cabin’s ceiling. All the while wishing desperately she’d never left the confines of city life.

She was trying admirably to not freak out like a total pansy, but when a shower of leggy spiders fell in her hair she gave up the fight. Giving a little squeak she launched herself from the old wooden chair and began to dance around like a lunatic while brushing her hands madly through her hair.

After a brief tussle with her own ego, she finally gave up and headed for a real shower. The kind with water and soap. No one had to know she’d nearly had a meltdown over a few spiders. Those ten acres, so happily purchased a few weeks ago, had come with a tiny hunting cabin. One room encompassing a very small and formerly very dirty shower, a toilet, a kitchen sink the size of her favorite pair of shoes, and a mini fridge fresh out of the box, all in a twelve-by-twelve room.

At the time it had seemed like the perfect place to hang tight while she had a place built. In retrospect she should have taken her brother and his girlfriend up on the offer to make use of their guest room until the build was completed. She loved both Cal and Molly, but she had little interest in finding them in compromising positions all over the apartment. Given the pair of them, it would be near impossible to catch them doing anything but getting frisky.

The creepy cabin in the middle of nowhere was her home for the duration. It wasn’t so bad, aside from the bugs, the smothering summer heat, and the incessant nature noise. No one ever told her living in the sticks was loud. Since her first week in the cabin she’d been serenaded nightly by an orchestra of bullfrogs, crickets, and assorted evening critters. Every morning the birds woke her at first light. Eventually she’d adjust to the nature sounds, but to date she’d been averaging about six hours a night; not really enough to feel rested. Altogether leaving her just a little bit cranky from lack of sleep.

In theory living alone surrounded by nature was an amazing retreat, but in reality it was quite the adjustment for a city girl leaping into the next stage of her life.

After scrubbing all the spider particles from every square inch of her body she exited the shower and tossed on a pair of simple cotton panties and the thinnest tank top she could find. It was a beautiful August evening, but the heat of the day hadn’t dissipated enough to leave Lainey comfortable. The heat and humidity left her feeling sticky the moment she toweled off from the shower.

Being a half-mile down a winding lane in the middle of nowhere had its perks. Sitting on her miniscule porch in her underwear with her feet propped up was definitely one of them.

Well, until she saw a car’s lights turn off the main road and make its way toward the cabin. It could only be a handful of people. Her brother Cal, Cal’s girlfriend Molly, or more likely Chris. Chris the hottie architect that she’d met through Cal and Molly, who was contracted to redesign the coffee shop she’d purchased.

Given the light glow of a near full moon, Lainey guessed it to be nearly ten. Rather late for a business meeting. Finally, she determined it was Chris, as his sleek black car eased slowly closer until it was nearly ready to park next to her own car on the far side of the porch. Lost in her own thoughts, she was about to greet the hottie architect in her panties.

Dammit.

Launching herself to her feet in an effort to reach the front door of the cabin before Chris cleared the porch was easier said than done. In her rush she almost crushed a cricket with a poorly placed foot. Attempting to save the cricket’s life, Lainey lurched to the left and managed to trip over her own feet. Landing in an inelegant pile, she watched the cricket hop away unharmed.

As she was attempting to right herself Chris stepped into view and halted his progress at the foot of the porch.

About the Author

Let me tell you a little about myself…. I am a true southern belle. I like my sweet tea and I like blessing hearts. I was born and raised in a one stop light town in North Alabama. As a child I was a bit of a tomboy. I loved riding bikes and playing basketball and volley ball. I have 2 younger sisters and although I never had a brother my older cousin was the closest thing to that than anyone.
As a teen I loved to read. My favorite author was Lurlene McDaniel, I loved and still love all of her books. I think I have made it through all of them by now. Lol. Although I have added several authors to my favorites list, I still enjoy her writing style. But she isn’t the reason I became an author. That is all my cousin LeAmbra’s fault. Y’all may know her better as Author Salice Rodgers. I had a dream one night about an unplanned and secret filled relationship between a broken women and even more broken man. I asked Amber to write a book about it. She refused and said she wouldn’t write my story that I should. So that’s how Resurrected Secrets was born and Author N. Nieto.
These days I spend my time chasing kids and cleaning house. I somehow find time to blog, read and write in the middle of all of that. I always say as long as one person likes my stories than it’s worth it in the end for me
